Cookie problem August 8, 2002 5:06 PM   Subscribe

I'm getting big giant "Element USER_NAME is undefined in COOKIE" messages instead of a front page on MetaFilter in Mozilla 1.1b for Windows. IE seems fine. I get the header, then a big gray error box with a stack trace and stuff. MetaTalk appears fine, and I can look at individual MeFi threads and archives and such. It also appears to come and go; I was able to get a front page earlier today, but now I can't. Happens when logged in, when not logged in. Been happening for a couple of days. Any other Mozilla users seeing this?

(Oop, pardon me, that error message quote contains cf code in angle brackets. View source to see.)

try erasing all cookies related to the site and logging in again (apologies if you've already done this; i received the advice here once and it fixed my problem)

It happened to me yesterday. I backspace/deleted my MeTa comment, went elsewhere on the 'net, came back and tried again and it worked correctly. Using Moz 1.0

Mozilla 1.1b on Win2k has been behaving impeccably for me. I've noticed a definite increase in crashes and freezes since the 1.0 release though.

go to http://www.metafilter.com/index.mefi?delcookie=yes in your browser to stop the problem.

I use moz 1.1b as my primary browser on both platforms, and this week I was getting this error in IE6 for windows actually.

I have no idea why one single cookie variable would suddenly be vaporized (there's a check for user id right before that, that works fine).

In the meantime, I'll setup a site-wide error handler to present people with the proper link to delete their cookie.
