MeFi Swap - how is it going? August 14, 2002 5:35 AM   Subscribe

Can I just drop a quick post about MeFi swap? I know Dreama has a wonderful site devoted to the whole shebang, but i fancied the MeFi format to find out how it is going with people. Well?

Just posted mine... spent 45 minutes in the fucking post office. Hopeless arseholes. *Grumble* *Moan*

Otherwise cool - received two (in a similar style). Both sound good, especially to the wife - who gives a big thumbs up.

I'm intrigued to know whether Salmacis sent a CD jam-packed with 70s prog to his swapset after all...?

hmm.. i have just posted one of mine. using the company to send locally, but I have to risk the post office tomorrow for the ones going to the states.

i have received a tape from anastasiav. some good stuff on there. nice to receive a present through the post!

I got mine from cyniczny, but no one else, and I haven't sent mine out yet, so I don't feel too bad, I'm so lazy.

It's cool, it's loaded with neat songs, I didn't count but I would have to guess it's well over 50. I'm doing pure audio though (I'm a purist) and it's full to 79 minutes and 22 seconds, but I spared my listeners and did not include any death metal or hardcore.

I sent my 5 out a couple of weeks ago (wasn't the deadline somewhere around August 1, kids?). Have only received 1, from pikachulolita (which is snazzycandycool!), and have some reason to believe no others have yet been exported. Sad day.

But I'm sure they'll arrive sooner or later! (Probably after I move at the end of August...)

Also, I was optimistically thinking that people would use MeFiSwapTalk to review the mixes they received (if they didn't email the sender directly), and was hoping to get some feedback - or at least to find out that my CD made it through the mail. So far, for my SwapGroup at least, that hasn't been the case. Isn't getting a response from people half the fun?

I believe tomorrow is the deadline for posting.
posted by Frasermoo at 6:50 AM on August 14, 2002

Yep, deadline tomorrow.

I'm in Marquis' group and received his, plus two others, so I have to imagine others are on their way to you, Sean. How much longer does mail to Canada take than mail across the country, I wonder? Also, I think all three of our group's slackers sent email this week apologizing for slowness and listing CDs received (pretty sure the Canadian post cannot be blamed if you didn't get *those* but then again maybe things are done differently up there).

I'm mailing mine today; shoulda put a Cure song on so I could call the mix "Procrastination Street".

Aw, SapphireBlue, I'm not really bitter. It's just annoying because I'm going away on vacation and then moving, and I was hoping to have CDs to listen to for the trip. That, and the fact that I've received 86% of the CDs from the other swap I'm in, which in fact started after the MeFi one.

And it seems I got the date wrong. I retract my complaints.

ack, to anyone who got me as their partner person, i sent mine out today... just got a new machine and i had a devil of a time trying to put the cd burner from my old one into the new comp. i ended up just paying someone to install it. my apologies for the delay, but all the CDs i got so far (2 cds from one person) have been godsends, considering i always need something new to listen to while working..
posted by lotsofno at 7:03 AM on August 14, 2002

I got an e-mail last night, with an apology to a group of people for not getting his CDs out on time. Curiously, this was the first e-mail I received regarding the MeFi Swap II from anyone since my very first confirmation letter.

If anyone has me in their group, and would like a CD, contact me (I have a mix or two already made). After I got no e-mail with my list of people and addresses, and after there was no response to me on the bulletin board, I kinda gave up.

Will there be another swap?
posted by Songdog at 7:30 AM on August 14, 2002

lotsofno - Looking forward to receiving your mix. That leaves 2 people from our group who should be sending something out. How about it guys?

Aside from the fact that half of our group is taking until the last possible minute to send the mixes, I've been very happy with the swap so far. The CDs I've gotten have been cool and filled with songs I've never heard and artists I've never heard of.

So far, the swap is confirming something that I've been saying for a while. There's so much good music out there, in so many styles and flavors, that no one can hope to be familiar with most of it. Anyone who makes blanket pronouncements about the state of the current music scene or who snobbishly touts the superiority of their own little preferred niche of the musical forest is just showing off their ignorance.

Based on the mixes I've gotten and the on-liner notes that a number of people have posted, I'd have to say that I'm familiar with no more than 5-10% of what other people are putting in their mixes. More importantly - none of those people are overlapping each other - every mix is completely different.

Marquis - I'm one of the few people to post reviews on Dreama's site for the mixes I've received. I think it's fun for even people in other swap groups to see what else was being sent.

BTW - If anyone from the other groups is wanting to receive more CDs than the ones from your group, e-mail me. I'm willing to burn off some more copies of my mix to trade for your mix.

To everyone who is expecting a CD from me, I apologize for being so late. I've just been swamped with a crapload of responsibilities this past month. Rest assured, I'm looking at the CDs right now. They will be mailed in two days. For everyone who has given me theirs, thanks, they sound interesting. I now have a rather odd collection of music, but entertaining nonetheless.
posted by BlueTrain at 8:12 AM on August 14, 2002

I didn't post reviews on Dreama's site, because I always figure it's nice to get email. It's a little more personal, though, for example, yhbc can't see what I have to say about tdismukes' CD.

Which, I have to say, is pretty good - a cappella stuff aside (I'm really trying, guys) - I've found that in my musical explorations I've neglected a decade (the 80s) and some excellent artists (Billy Bragg, Richard Thompson, Mission of Burma, Victor Krummenacher).

Thanks for both of them, guys. I've really enjoyed the experience.

And lotsofno: glad to hear it's on the way! I'm looking forward to receiving it.

Since our whole swapset appears to be here, I'll pipe up. Lotsofno: you should have received CDs from me, tdismukes and rocketman (who included a disc from interrobang). Have you not gotten them all?

I'm the laggard in my group. Received 4 cool discs. I've had an amazing technical struggle putting mine together (totally my own fault), but it will be going out at last today.

was he really thinking of doing this? I'd love to see the tracklist. i'm a prog-rock fiend. I'd say about half the music on my swapset cd is modern progressive rock. (very different music than what's on the other cds that I've gotten) I can't wait to hear what they think of it...

I sent mine out and have gotten 2 so far. I haven't had time to listen to them all the way through yet, let alone write something up. I will eventually, whether I email a response or post it to the forum (or both).

Eventually, we should do a Mefi swap swap. Where we make a mix of songs from mixes we've received in swaps.

Aren't you in my swapset corpse?

Getting it out by the end of the week. sorry for the delay. Like Bluetrain, I became quite busy all of the sudden. The disks are burned, but I just have to get to the post office. Hopefully, tomorrow afternoon or at the latest Friday.

Sent 5 (including one overseas--cost me almost $5 postage) and got back 2.
Many thanks to those two. Both were packed wth great new music I'd never heard of before.

Lest I sound ungrateful, a 2 of 5 five ratio was good enuf that I'd gladly sign up again.

Okay, let me know if you don't recieve it in a week or two. The only person that I've heard from that got mine was witchstone.

I got yours, it's great! I love the weakerthans, in fact, i'm going to see them at the end of the month on their long awaited east coast tour.

The Weakerthans boast some of the best songwriting in Canada - folk poetry over a bed of hooky roots-punk. Hooray for Canada. What's more, I believe the Greg Macpherson Band is opening on this tour... I've never seen him live, but Good Times Coming Back Again is an outstanding, outstanding album. [Self-link!]

I'm sure I'm mistaken, but I thought the point of punk was that it had no roots and employed no hooks.

I'm sending mine tomorrow. All my swappees are in the States, so the postage is going to be a little scary. I've had to wait until I get paid.

It's a bit unnerving, sending them out. I'm not sure if anybody will like my selection, as I am a little behind the times (an old rock chick, me).

I've got 3 so far, and they've been great. Lots of stuff I've never heard of, and would never have got to hear if not for the Swap.

I confess I have not sent mine yet (I was moving!), but I've only gotten one. I listened to ten minutes of silence before I realized it was probably a data cd with mp3s on it. Now I feel both dumb and guilty.

Out by Friday, guys, I promise.

One person's posted on mefiswaptalk that they got mine but I've not heard from anyone else. The same person has posted saying theirs are sent so I'll be checking the mailbox in the next few days or so.

To be quite honest I sent off my CDs never really expecting to get more than a couple back in return, if any. Does that make me a bad person?

I've gotten two, sent 5 a while back -- I'm one of the vocal review type people on the site -- and so far I feel like I've easily gotten my money/effort's worth. Still, I hope to see at least one more, preferably 3 more.

And Dreama rules, is all.

Hmm. I don't remember threatening to make a CD full of 70s prog. Maybe you're thinking of evanizer? I couldn't resist putting in some more modern neo-prog though: Arena, Marillion, Grey Lady Down. The likes of Echolyn, Porcupine Tree and Threshold will have to wait for MeFi Swap III (you are warned in advance!)

So far, I've received cortex's excellent CD, and I'm expecting Mars Saxman's any day now. The other three I've not heard from.

i sent out my five over a week ago. i heard back from two folks that they'd received the mix, but nothing from the others. had to re-post one of the cds; that went out yesterday.

i've gotton one mix in return. it was amazing--i liked three of the songs so much i immediately purchased corresponding albums. i hear that two other mixes are in the mail winging their way here. i check the mailbox every day expectantly!

one real plus of this swap, even if i don't get another cd from it, is that this whole mix cd deal has sorta caught on at work. it's become cool to bring in a few copies of a mix cd and hand them out. as a result i've gotton five other mixes from work kids and made three others to give away in the meantime. hooray for new music!

also, "on-liner notes" are all the rage nowadays. just for kicks, here's the mix i put together

I sent out my five, as part of the latecomer's group. .. have gotten 2, from LoraT and Dreama (thank you, very interesting) but have not gotten the other 5 and I had to fish for an acknowlegement (LoraT answered). . .

So I'm happy with the 2 I got but am somewhat less than happy with not getting the others, and not getting feedback or hearing that at least they got theirs. . ..
