Congratulations!! to our very own, very gifted mothershock on the publication of her memoir: The Beginning of Everything: The Year I Lost My Mind and Found Myself. She has a good interview up at The Rumpus about the book, which covers her process of healing and reinvention after a neurological injury.

(disclosure: Andi is a friend and an all-around awesome person)

I really enjoyed this book; if you are a human being who has ever been sick, or you've ever known anyone who has been sick, I'd encourage you to read this memoir. It really encapsulates that ineffable quality of illness, how it takes you over and changes you but also brings you back to yourself. I don't read for pleasure much anymore, but I sincerely could not stop reading this.

I'm also an academic and I do not (1) Read things without putting them down six million times or (2) Give undeserved effusive praise for writing, so I really do mean it when I say that this book is wonderful.

I addressed some of the medical stuff in this interview, and wrote about what it was like to try to write a memoir about a time when I wasn’t capable of narrative for this newsletter here (scroll down a bit for my part).
