Metafilter's 20th: Any Plans May 23, 2018 8:27 AM   Subscribe

If my math is correct Metafilter will be 20 next year. This seems like something that may take a year to plan. Are there any plans? Anyone planning on making plans? What's the plan for plans?

No concrete plans yet, although we've talked broadly about doing something like the 10th: a bunch of small meetups wherever people want to organize them, and then maybe one central thing somewhere. People can brainstorm in here!

Also, I'm bad at planning, so someone else will have to do that, but I'm happy to help.

Crazy idea I thought of this second and that would probably require hiring an actual event planner and thus is out:

We should have a conference.

So receptions in the evening, talks/meetings during the day. Talks would be mefites talking about stuff that they know about. All different topics. Like our own personal TED but with lower production values, probably. In addition to formal talks, there could be roundtables (i.e. you set up a ballroom with either a general topic or no-topic and then designate individual tables to be about topic/subtopic x, with a few people who know about subtopic X scheduled to be there and then everyone goes there to talk about X....hey, it would be like The Blue but in person with people instead of posts as the discussion trigger!).

It should last 4-5 days. Childcare should be available. Matthowie and Cortex will be keynote speakers at the plenary sessions.

Are there any FPPs that could reasonably be boiled down into articles, and the results done as a short-run or via POD? Emotional Labor, the "You do WHAT" threads, maybe the various words-of-wisdom/turning 20-30-40 AskMes?

I was thinking that instead of setting the Grand To-Do at the mathematical centre, we put it in Toronto (or anywhere in Canada). I realize this might sound self-serving, but I'm not saying it because it's near to me. I'm saying it because it's not in Trump-land. Of the places not in Trump-land Canada seems like the country most easily travelable to by most mefites and Toronto seems like the city most conveniently travelable to by the greatest number of mefites .

In conclusion, I want to come but I don't want to go to Trumpland. Please don't make me go to Trumpland. Plus don't you all want to take a break from Trumpland?

...then again I live in Estonia and there are to my knowledge four Estonians on metafilter that I know of including myself, and I know them all personally, they all live in the same city as me, and I introduced mefi to two of them, so that particular meetup would not really differ from going for a walk downtown... oh well.

I still regret missing the 10 year in NOLA, which apparently was ridiculous.

Why don't we just do a live video call for 24-36-whatever hours that people can dial into at any point and chat?

I was going to suggest something like this. Almost everyone has tablets, smartphones and/or laptops that are fully video capable now.

My idea is that if we had a central video chat place people can even set up multiple links to meetups if they coincide, IE meetup in city A has simultaneous views of meetups B, C, and D by either a centralized mirror like CuSeeMe used to do or multiple device and facetime/hangout/whatever calls.

Most venues have the bandwidth for this now, too, so it would be a lot easier than ever.

I'm going to knit that MeFi hoodie that I've been meaning to make for years, and I'm going to write up the pattern and put it on Ravelry for free (I can't in good conscience charge for a design that essentially includes a brand name) so any knitting MeFites who want to can make one for themselves. It'll be my anniversary present to the Metafilter community.

As for meetups, I wish I could take a trip to somewhere special in order to go to a meetup, but the reality is I'll probably be going to a Toronto meetup.

I like the idea of a conference, maybe even invite social media and community scholars. I suspect the geographic middle of our demographic is closer to Chicago or Nashville, maybe Indianapolis or Columbus or Detroit or Monreal if you factor in weighing international members a bit more. If you weigh them in too much we're in New York or Jessamyn's house.

Of course, this geographic approach assumes the best result will come from inconveniencing everyone equally. Perhaps we should just meet in New York where being annoyed is recognized as a virtue, and the inconvenience is more like a constant.

In all seriousness, I think a worldwide convention is a good idea. I remember the 8th anniversary meetup in Portland as a big deal and people traveled from all over and it was really sweet and Jessamyn gave me a hug. I think a large number of us would travel and would help transport and house Mefites who want to go but lack the means. I’m thinking of talks on “What I’m Doing and How Mefi Helped” performances by Mefi Performers, food by Mefi cooks, and drinks by Mefi Brewers. I just came back from EG in Carmel (an outgrowth of the original TED community) and Mefi can totally do this. As proof, I nominate Someone Else to make this happen. And I will totally support Someone Else in making this happen.

Is the actual date the 18th?

Further to the (as yet unanswered) question of our honourable MeFi-colleague:

I note, from cursory research, that the MeFi 10th anniversary celebrations appear to have taken place over a 3-day period, being 17, 18 and 19 July 2009.

Yet the archives of this web-site indicate that their oldest entry was that certain MetaFilter post made by our blessed Matriarch "Ma Thowie" and promulgated on 14 July 1999 (at 10.03 PM, Greenwich Mean Time).

The URL of such post, however, suggests that it was the 19th post made to MetaFilter, and not the first (one can only assume that a certain "test" post was, in fact, the true moment of MetaFilter's genesis).

I assume that 17-19 July 2009 was chosen as the appropriate period for celebration of the completion of MetaFilter's first decade because the 14th of such month in such year was a Tuesday.

In 2019, however, the 14th of July will be a Sunday. We therefore have the opportunity to more precisely align our festivities with both the correct anniversary and a conveniently-situated weekend.
posted by the quidnunc kid at 3:36 AM on May 25, 2018 [9 favorites]

Further brief analysis of the Meta archives suggests that 14 July 2019 will also be:

The 19.3616438356164th anniversary of the first (extant) posting to MetaTalk (4 March 2000);
The 15.5972602739726th anniversary of the first (extant) posting to AskMetaFilter (8 December 2003)
The 5.02657534246575th anniversary of the first (extant) posting to Fanfare (8 April 2014)
The 13.6547945205479th anniversary of the first (extant) posting to MetaFilter Projects (7 November 2005)
The 13.0383561643835th anniversary of the first (extant) posting to MeFi Music (30 June 2006);
The 12.8849315068493th anniversary of the first (extant) posting to MetaFilter Jobs (24 August 2006); and
The 9.20273972660273th anniversary of the first (extant) posting to IRL: Mefi Events (1 May 2010).

So in accordance with our newly-established policy of calendrical exactitude, I would be grateful if members could also celebrate those anniversaries (to 14 decimal places) at the appropriate time.

The 14th of July 2019 will also be my 30th birthday, so party at mine I guess?

10 AM: Proper Cast Iron Pan Care Technique: 3 distinguished panelists consider cast iron from informed perspectives: metallurgy, folk custom and tradition, and benign neglect, followed by debate
To throw in another historical datapoint, in 2013 there was some energy around a weekend-long "Camp Metafilter" retreat event. I was overwhelmed with life around then, but this time around I could be willing to do more. And I do have a very affordable and lovely site to offer. It's about an hour from Philadelphia and so maybe not the easiest place in the world for lots of folk to get to, but it's one option.

I like the idea of a conference, maybe even invite social media and community scholars.

I like this idea too. Especially because it could function as the focus, but people could choose to attend part or all, and stay over wherever they wanted. The program could have talk sessions, but also side trips/cocktail events/dinners etc. But it would be a hell of a lot to coordinate, as a caveat. The cellular nature of the 10th worked really well as a solution.

Given the advances in livestreaming since the 10th, what about a hybrid global/local event? A home base in some central location, livestreaming events/talks/whatever, that coordinated groups around the world could join into in realtime?

I think the day drinking and weed smoking can take place even while presentations and panels take place. That's basically my experience of the furry conventions I've attended.

Also, I won't attend unless we have some good DJs spinning tunes for several hours every night so I can get my dance on.

Basically I attend furry conventions because they have DJs every night. Well, and the giant animals. I could forego the giant animals in favor of life-sized MeFites, but I do insist on the dancing.

day drinking and weed smoking

I wouldn't turn out for that alone, though I'm sure many people would love it and there's nothing wrong with that if it's your thing. I guess this is another reason arguing for a celebration as a more cellular thing - there are many different agendas that people define as 'fun' or 'connecting', so beyond a short meetup, it's not actually easy to meet all the interests of attendees - sober/recovery people and other non-drinkers, people with kids who want to bring them along, board gamers, people who would really like to do crafts or tours or talks or 'ideas' stuff who just might not be the same folks as those who want a party meetup, or want a different mix of party vs. other activities.

Oh, I'll definitely bring my cribbage board and some cards. Probably also an Uno deck.

Cards Against Humanity is literally against humanity. It devolves anyone who plays it. I don't care if you find it fun, don't bring it. I've watched that game tear apart parties even involving people who weren't playing it.

Ditto Monopoly.

And, while I'm unlikely to make it and it would be a gateway drug of sorts for folks like myself, I think the video chat idea is nowhere near as tenable or nice as just having folks do a physical meet somewheres interesting or functional or, ideally, both and leaving the digital/tech aspects of it, be it sharing stories or pictures, until after the fact.

I dunno, it seems very 90s conference call that's trying way too hard and/or The Office episode where there was a corporate party in NYC and all the branch offices dialed in to webcast their simultaneous-yet-completely-not-the-awesome-corporate party and everyone cringes in unison at how not great it all works out.

Now, I could definitely go for a cookoff or pie contest.

or jeebus, let's not make it contests. Let's just make it "put your best thing forward to share with others".

Cortex and I could probably throw a little thing at our house in Portland, with pancakes or catered food or something, at a minimum. It might be cool to rent an affordable venue though? I’ll put some thought into it, feel free to mefimail me if you have ideas. I’m pretty sure I’m not up to running a convention or an anniversary overnight camp (although I’m sure we’ll have our usual NW mefi camping trip in 2019 if people want to come to that!) - things like that take a lot of work to make sure they’re properly inclusive and accessible. I think my goal would be meeting at a place near easy public transit that has food of many sorts and drinks both alcoholic and non, where it’s possible to hear each other talk, and where both introverts and extroverts can feel comfortable. And I’d love to hire a doughnut foodcart.

There's probably no way that any real-life meeting will happen anywhere close enough for me to be there, unless I organise one. I'd be up for that but there are so few MeFites around that it's not likely that any would show up.
*sigh*

I'm 300 miles away from Portland, but I'm more connected with Portland MeFites than with any other group somehow, so I'd likely travel to Portland for a meetup.

i've tried to get meetups happening in the Spokane area but even those locals I've found aren't IRL types. Much sadness.

You can think whatever you like is enjoyable. But you're telling other people what to do, which is not the same thing.

STOP FIGHTING AND START PLANING THE PARTY YOU WANT.

This really comes down to where peeps are, and if there are no other mefites there, can they afford to travel? I live on an island with no mefites, and July is not a good, or cost effective time, to visit. So I'm looking at Providence, Boston, or jessamyn's.

I'm not sure where I'll be in the world in July of 2019 (most likely either Finland and Iceland) so I'm all for having the kind of distributed celebration that MeFi10 had. Incidentally, I went to Portland for MeFi10 and I have all kinds of nostalgia for that party, ably captured in pb's video with clips and photos.

At the ten year, we had 7 continents represented including Antarctica.

How cool would it be for the 20th if we could get representation on the ISS?

Apparently, MetaFilter has a user named cilantro. This isn't a no-homers type situation, I was referring to the herb. Sorry, if you're reading this and misunderstood!

Aw, Kattullus, thanks for sharing that link. Some of the people in there have become my bestest of friends, and others I’m fond of but haven’t seen in a good long while. Made me tear up a little to think about how that means it’s been 10 years since I first met those people. <3

Make up your minds, people! Some of us need to sell a kidney to afford the air fare and you don't organize that overnight.

One could just piggy back on someone else's larger, more established convention and have many, many side events.

Hub cities like NY, SanFran, Chicago, London, somewhere in Korea (HI STAV) and all the others I'm not thinking of should start planning, maybe on IRL with handy sidebar links. I have the day off tomorrow and maybe I'll set up a Cape and Islands IRL.

Like hell I'll rent out a kidney! Sign a lease to someone and next thing there's like 20 college students throwing a party and you KNOW shit is gonna go down. Nuh uh. No way. Never again!

Based on a skim of the comments it sounds like our big anniversary party should have a theme like this.

Maybe we should postpone celebrating the 20th anniversary for a full year, and then go out and get Metafilter drunk.

Heh, I read that as "Metafilter drunk," as in "I got totally Metafilter drunk last night, you won't believe what I ate that I found in the back of the fridge"

Seattle figures Portland will have a big meetup and fails to plan. Portland figures Seattle will plan a big meetup because it’s half way between Vancouver and Portland and fails to plan a meetup. Vancouver is a little skeptical about sending a contingent into Trumpistan but ultimately figures there will be a big meetup in either Seattle or Portland and fails to plan a meetup.

In the the end a Mefi husband and wife in Puyallup go to Red Robin for dinner and there’s your PNW meetup.

I could also be at a Seattle meetup, and if that were somehow combined with the Portland crew that would be welcome. There is no Spokane crew. It's me and wallabear who is in Walla Walla and basically nobody else who would ever attend a meetup because I've tried, Lord knows I've tried.

So dammit, how do I get someone in one of those places that I have to drive 300 miles to be at to start making plans so I can start channeling "you must attend this" energy to others that I know (who aren't from here) to make it be a Truly Great Party instead of Just Another Locals Meeting Up event?

Alternately, we could all just find a campground in the Cascades and then we'd all have to drive.
