Hey, rolling out a new piece of merch today: a big blue mug with the "MF" logo on one side and, on the other, "Note: everyone needs a mug".
Mug!
This is coming from TopatoCo, where we also have some stickers and t-shirts; you can find a link to all that on the fundraising page, but we'll be working on getting a dedicated merch page in place down the line.
We'll also have some more merch coming along, including real soon now a brand new shirt featuring delightful occult scratchings from robocop_is_bleeding.
But for now: mugs! Go get yourself a mug. If you're so inclined. Ideal for people who consume beverages.

Should things like this get a nudge via the nag banner at the top of the screen that folks can hide? I vote why not, but others may think it's a bit much.

wenestvedt, I think you need to enter your address info in the 'checkout' process to get a shipping rate since it will depend on geography and speed/what method you want. (You can enter an address and it will show you the shipping options before it asks for payment info.)
For a quick sample, I'm on US east coast and seeing just over $7 for 2-day USPS, just over $12 for UPS ground, and higher for other methods. But you may be in a different zone etc.

Oh my god, the typography is AWFUL and completely unexpressive of MeFi. I'm sorry, I really think that is super awful. When can you ask us designers/design students for advice?! We who are interested and can be involved in the design process should be able at least have an option of showing a few different options to the community, right?

Yeah, but the Classic theme doesn't even look that ugly! When I talk about typography, I mean the actual way it can all be shaped, aligned and designed. Typography =/= typeface. It's not even kerned properly between the 'r' and the 'y', they are too close together and it is incredibly unbalanced. The 8 biggest typography mistakes designers make

Not to say I don't love the mug - I love everything else about it. It's literally Classic theme as a mug. But I am well-aware of the pitfalls of websites that say "hey! just type in some text in the back and it'll be fine!" I took typography classes and spent hours learning tons of new shit that wouldn't have even crossed a layperson's mind, but is really quite crucial to the look and style of a product for maintaining balance and aesthetics in a way that is harmonious. If you are willing to consider my suggestion, I'm down to contribute a new image using the Classic theme font that would be more what I am talking about.

It is, as you say, literally the Classic theme as a mug. It's deliberately a plodding block of untweaked Verdana, riffing on a phrase similarly rendered on the site in a plodding block of untweaked Verdana.
I am unlikely to disagree with you about the merits of good typography etc. but I think you may be reacting to Here Is Thing X with, essentially, "but why didn't you do not-X" in this case and I'm not sure what to say other than, no, this is Thing X on purpose. It's okay if you aren't into Thing X. There will be other things that aren't Thing X. This particular thing is Thing X.

@cortex: My main question is if that slogan was meant to look that different from what the Classic theme comments typeface actually looks like. Classic theme actually renders really well and cleanly on my browser and I'm commenting on how the back of the mug comment doesn't look like that at all (it's a far thinner font, it's a serif font, the mug's quote is designed in a bold sans serif font, the font is disjointed etc in comparison to the nice hierarchy of the Classic theme comments), so I'm responding to what I understand as Classic theme.
"no, this is Thing X on purpose" is genuinely a weak defense for a design decision...In my critique, it doesn't actually look close enough to what I would understand to be on purpose to be, if it is meant to match the Classic theme. But if you were playing it loosely to embody that, then I guess that's fine. But I'm giving my constructive criticism and asking for more what you were thinking.

On the second hand, I may need a hug. I think I might just be a little bit frustrated since I would really like to help out on designing merchandise since I feel stupidly passionate about this place. And about typography, and hence that post. Have that mug, I'd like a chance to possibly design another one at least...

I may be misunderstanding you, but: if you are see comment text in a serif font, you have set up a custom font in your preferences in Classic and then forgotten that you've done that. Verdana is the default typeface in the Classic theme.

I am not in any way complaining, but I want to drop the factoid: It's cheaper to ship a Metafilter mug to France than to California. Feel free to whip that out next time someone makes a MetaTalk post about US-centrism on the site.

I would buy a mug with Verdana for MetaFilter. Maybe even Papyrus or Comic Sans, so long as it was kerned correctly.
I dunno if I'd buy a MetaFilter Bübi Bottle. Can it contain hot liquids? Maybe it too is a mug.

So interesting thing. I bought several mugs over two days. Yesterday, the mug cost $18 and shipping was $7.94 for USPS. Then today I placed the last two orders (one was non-USAian so doesn't count) and mug was $19.00 and shipping was $6.74--basically the same total, but ?. This is not a complaint--just an odd thing.

Cool site - I ended up ordering some silly stuff to send to my bro out in Seattle for his b-day. To answer someone's shipping cost question upthread, for the basic shipping, it was about $3 and change (2-4 days).

Alright, re-order is in place. There's a nice big message on the order page making it clear that it's on backorder; gonna be a couple weeks turnaround for a second run of these before they can start actually shipping 'em out to y'all, but you can order right now if you like.

They'll be around for a while! What we've done is put in another order for six dozen, which'll take the mug folks about two weeks probably to get made and shipped to TopatoCo, who will turn around and start shipping them again. For the time being, you can order before the new supply gets in as well, but that's why there's a big hey it might take a while because we're back ordered message on the order page for now.

Is there only ever going to be the one style/size of mug? I never buy oversized ones because they don’t fit in my car cup holder, a dealbreaker. I have a treasured collection of sentimental, standard size/shape mugs that get used frequently and I would love to add a MF one to that rotation.

I intend to mix it up (with mugs, and with merch in general) over time; next one we'll do will address a different set of wants, for sure. I like the idea that there will be a mug that'll work for everyone even if not every mug will work for everyone.
