Fanfare Games February 20, 2020 8:58 AM   Subscribe

I want to gush about Animal Crossing: New Horizons but I'm not sure a link to the direct would be a good post. Any news about adding Video Games to Fanfare?

No timeline for it right now; we've been needing to focus on other things on the site, so FanFare continues to be a slow simmer as far as development work goes. Adding games stuff as a media category is still high on my own personal pony request list, though.

I also really want to ask a question about what casual games people are playing on Android these days, so maybe we just need video games to be Fizz's chatty MeTa topic of the week?

when will we finally see goosefilter. what about the terrible goose mefites who feel underrepresented.

That's a bit dissapointing but oh well. I was mostly hoping for a place to exchange AC codes to visit mefite islands.

What Josh means is they've been busy developing DonutMe, a sub site where users can discuss donuts and donut-related content.

Still waiting to hear if/when beignets will be added as a category to DonutMe.

In the past there have been MetaTalks about Pocket Camp to exchange friend codes. I'm hoping for one of those for New Horizons come March. (And I'm still inexplicably playing Pocket Camp, so if anybody wants to exchange friend codes for that do let me know.)

Anyway I think an FPP with a link to the Direct would be a perfectly acceptable thing, although maybe not a place to exchange codes, more like a place to talk about Isabelle's island outfit and question just how many features won't actually be in the game on launch.

I'll throw it into this week's mix. I've mostly avoided making chatfilter metas around the subject of video games, because I post about them so regularly elsewhere. But, since you asked.

I too would love for video games to show up on fanfare, but I'm still happy to make my posts over on the blue, it's what I'm mostly about.

This! It's a fine and long-standing tradition to kick up a MetaTalk for code-swappin' and such, and if there just happens to be a great deal of genial AC chatter in a MeFi and/or MeTa thread in the process then I'd put bells to donuts that wouldn't be frowned on.

It looks so good!!!

I looked away from it so I could still be surprised by the rest of it later!

Also, hey, the game is Not Done! How about that! I was not expecting that, and certainly not for something as big as the holidays/festivals to be missing.

I don't understand what's stopping us from just... posting about a game in there? Seems weird that it has to enter some mythical mod queue to be sorted out.

I think it's half avoiding crunch and half preventing people from time-travelling to the holiday events.

Surely we should just storm into whatever fucking thread we want and start honking. Ohhhh I'm sorry was this an AskMe about leaving your husband HONK not anymore HONK

It may be just me but I've always felt that MeFightClub is its own thing with its own community even if it was originally born from MeFi. It's a very different experience than what being able to post in Fanfare would be.

Nothing's really stopping anyone in a formal sense; I'm not gonna yell at someone for experimenting with an ad hoc FanFare Talk attempt at a discussion.

It's more that folks would like formal support for a given medium; we have a toolset for TV, for movies, for podcasts, for books, each of which provides some extra structure and room for metadata tailored to the predominant features of that medium, and which is indexed more visibly on the front page of the subsite and is more searchable/browsable within the archives. Adding games means adding a similar bit of infrastructure. Just posting some free-form FanFare Talk threads about whatever is basically fine with me, it's just not the same thing as having a well-supported media category with full-on FanFare features.

Maybe a half-dozen of us want to chat about each season's current anime. But it's rare for any individual series to have enough going on (or enough mefites interested) to merit episode-by-episode posts. So we've been using quarterly posts on FanFare Talk as catchalls for whatever's going on that season.

So maybe that's precedent?

I joined it some time ago and often bounce over there when I'm excited about a new game. I'm not entirely sure what it is about the games I play, but they are never big ones lots of people are talking about. I think Banished had a thread, but whatever the last thing I went to look for didn't. And I didn't even try when I wanted to talk about phone games like that stupid egg game. There isn't much crossover between the games I play and the ones that most people who call themselves gamers play.

Question: Since rule and setting books for tabletop roleplaying games are typically, you know, books, with ISBNs and such, is there anything stopping us from posting about them on Fanfare?

Question:

If what you're asking is would I be interested in a thread ripping to shreds the current 5e Dungeon Master's Guide, then the answer is yes, yes I would

And I didn't even try when I wanted to talk about phone games like that stupid egg game.

I got the last trophy in that stupid egg game yesterday -- the one you have to sorta cheat to get anywhere in and then wait out literally months of unboosted chicken hatching to get the 10billionth chicken. I would be simply delighted to talk about that stupid egg game right now.

I'll need to give the 5e DMG a full reread, but I too have problems with it which I would love to discuss.

I thought Animal Crossing was a game you couldn't stop playing for a while and then get back to it because the in game people would think you abandoned them. Is this wrong? Also, the new Animal Crossings switch is so adorable. I love Stardew Valley and thought I would like Animal Crossing but I wouldn't want the pressure of not being able to take a break from it every once in a while.

Also, Baldur's Gate 3 is coming soon...... SOON.

The villagers mention (once) that they haven't seen you in forever and there's a chance one of them moved out while you weren't there if it has been multiple weeks since you last played but I think that's all. In older games your town would be overrun with weeds but there are ways to prevent that nowadays.

Look this is completely random, but cortex, another site I'm on has a mod/co-owner with a username similar to yours and my brain just associates you two for some dumbass reason. The thing is, I kind of hate this guy for various reasons ranging from petty to extremely justified (along -ism lines), so like every time you post I just go, "Wow, I'm so glad MF has cortex and not [other mod]."

Anyway I saw your post and immediately sent it to my partner (also on the site, and aware of this weird association I have) with the caption, "[other mod]: offensive as usual. meanwhile, cortex:"

themanwho, it’s coming next month. People are talking about it now though because of the latest Nintendo Direct video hyping the game before release.

And also because it has been eight (8) YEARS since the last full Animal Crossing game*, and this one was already pushed back once, and we are getting tetchy.

*Happy Home Designer was cute but not Animal Crossing, and it was five (5) years ago
