Icecream AntiSocial July 9, 2020 12:22 PM   Subscribe

In past years there have been icecream socials. Perhaps this year there can be an icecream anti-social!

- Everyone goes to a park, sits 10' away from each other, and huddles over their own personal pint
- Everyone eats ice cream over metafilter chat
- Synchronized icecream recipe exchange/testing/reporting*
- I don't even know, but y'all are creative. What does an ice cream anti social look like to you?

*DID YOU KNOW? You can take frozen cherries and cream and blend them in the blender and add 100% chocolate chocolate chips and VOILA ice cream with no added sugar and all its fiber intact and still extremely tasty. Just FYI.

Ice cream antisocial is that one girl who licked a tub of Blue Bell in a grocery store.
Antisocial ice cream is the same company producing ice cream contaminated with listeria and not telling anyone about it.

I like this idea, but what's the equivalent of ice cream in a park for those of us in the middle of winter? Can we do mulled wine around a bonfire or something and still join in?

Awww, I miss our ice cream shindigs at Crispus Attucks Park in DC. Last time someone brought watermelon slices with chaat masala sprinkled on. It was amazing.

I would totally do a mulled wine social, even if I have to sit under the AC for it work.

I would enthusiastically participate in this. Making and eating ice cream is one of my favorite summer activities.

lollusc, per nearly two decades of Boston living, the winter equivalent of eating ice cream walking around outside is *still* eating ice cream walking around outside. It doesn't matter if there's a literal nor'easter blowing through, all of the good ice cream shops would *still* have lines out the door any and every night of the week. Christina's would, Tosci's would, JP Licks would, Forge would, Honeycomb Creamery would, Gracie's would, Picco would, Tipping Cow would, New City Microcreamery would even though their name totally sounds like robots from 80s movies are making your ice cream, dammit I miss the Boston/Camberville ice cream ecosystem.

Great Odin's Beard, what other bits of mana have you been keeping from us all this time?

Yeah I'm gonna need some more details on this part, like ratios, and clarification on whether the cream is meant to be frozen before blending as well as the cherries...

You can also make "ice cream" with just a banana!

I have seen such a recipe several places, but I haven't tried it yet myself.

There is actually an appliance specifically for doing this. It's supposed to work with any frozen fruit. I periodically look at it longingly (I wasn't thrilled with the results when I used my food processor).

This could be fun. Last weekend, we made some strawberry ice cream using frozen strawberries left over from our trip to a berry farm. Best with an irresponsible amount of warmed chocolate sauce.

CHERRY CHOCOLATE CHIP ICECREAM 2.0

PER conservation of energy,* I am able to present you with this easy and delicious icecream. But first, an experiment: Drop a frozen cherry, blueberry, or similar in some cream. Wait a couple minutes. Remove the cherry. Observe the fresh coating of frozen cream on the cherry. Now that you know how this recipe works, on to the icecream!
- Cherries, frozen, quantity unknown. Maybe 8-16 ounces?
- Cream, refrigerated, quantity unknown. Maybe a pint?
- 100% cocoa chocolate chips, frozen, quantity unknown. Maybe 1-2 handfuls?
- Optional, for color: Boiled beet, the water from a boiled beet, beet juice, or beet powder. Not too much. Highly recommended.
Put cherries in a strong blender. Add the cream (and any beet coloring). Immediately start blending.

Add the least amount of liquid you can get away with for the blender to actually work. If it's too solid to blend, stir the mixture. If it's still too solid, add more cream. If it's too liquid, add more cherries.

Be sure to stop blending before all the cherry chunks are gone, so that there are chunks of cherry in your icecream. Stir the chocolate chips into the mixture.

Serve immediately.

NOTE: I've been using an old VitaMix. It's possible this won't work as well in a less enthusiastic blender. If you need a stronger blender, add a bit of milk or half and half and call it a milkshake or softserve.

SUBSTITUTIONS FOR THE CREAM: Sub coconut cream to make vegan. Sub half and half or milk or plant milk to make milkshake. Not too much! Sub local nut butter and probably some water to make a smoothie.

*Anyone need a homeschooling activity? You can just pour cream over frozen berries and it will work a lot like Magic Shell chocolate syrup. YUM CONSERVATION OF ENERGY!

There's an ice cream made of avocados and it is amazing. The coffee one is too good its bad. Because then you eat it all and buy more.

kaibutsu, I'm having a craving for JP Licks' El Diablo right now, even though I know it's technically a February flavor, usually. (Locally, Smitten's chocolate ganache is the best pure chocolate ice cream I've found in the near-year we've been back here, but it is Jeni's level expensive, alas.)

It is winter here but it was a glorious sunny day so I got ice cream. Whisky prune mascarpone which tastes a lot like rum and raisin but richer.

Mulled wine ice cream sounds like the perfect solution for the stinking hot Christmases we usually have.

I require no invitation or excuse to eat ice cream, so since somebody said, "ice cream," I'm headed to the freezer to polish off that 14 oz Haagen Daas coffee ice cream I failed to eat yesterday.

Stoneshop and I just went ahead and had some ice cream (and very nice ice cream it was!) without any of you being invited or involved in any way. We did not even bother to tell you in advance!

How's that for anti social?
