Mefi Club on Clubhouse February 27, 2021 4:34 PM   Subscribe

I recently joined clubhouse for information on startups, fundraising, and to provide knowledge about our industry domain. I looked for a Metafilter club on clubhouse but didn't come across one.

Is anyone working on a Mefi Clubhouse room? Metafilter has a great community and thought a club of Mefites would be nice. Sadly I don't have the time to start or manage one, so figured I'd ask and see if someone was working on one.

A key question here is surely how many mefites have access to clubhouse. In my head, I always assume it’s, like, maybe five.

Probably plenty of people want invitations.

Good point! I definitely requested one, just for kicks

I have a couple of invites if people are interested. I do have to use them for networking purposes, but could certainly set aside some as I get them to invite mediates on. I think they want to grow organically, and having mediates on their social network is only bound to be good in the long run. I think. :)

Missed the edit window, but mediates = mefites

In 2004, gmail invites were swapped. The more things change...

Out of curiosity I looked at what Clubhouse is since all I knew was that Musk wanted to talk to Putin on there, and I learned that it is for *shudder* voice chatting. I'm happy that other people are into it, but literally the best thing I think that has come out of the smartphone era is that I no longer need to ever actually talk to others in real time.

So like a walkie-talkie? Revolutionary!

Isn't it iPhone-only?

Yes, iPhone only.

Then that offers a hard limit to MeFi participation, given that not everyone sports an iPhone.

I'm on there and have a two invites. I don't really use it, but I'm happy to send them along to the first couple folks who memail me.

Why hasn't someone made Convoy, an app that lets people simulate driving a big rig cross country? It would let you do fake CB radio chats, but it'd work like Penn & Teller's Desert Bus minigame: you can only radio other rigs while actually "driving" a rig in the app, and it veers slightly so you can't just set it and forget it, and you can only "radio" other rigs in range.

Because, like real CB radio, it would quickly devolve into idiots who use dedicated traffic/emergency channels for chatter because no one wants to switch away from 19 because they're moving too fast to have a conversation on any other channel -- and the people who shout back at them to get off this channel it's for emergency / traffic use only, and wind up playing their stereos through the mic at max volume to make the whole thing fucking useless.

At least that's my experience when my dad got into CB.

There are some real privilege issues with these questions. Not everyone has the privilege to link their mefi ID with their clubhouse ID. Clubhouse uses real names.

Clubhouse uses real names.

Having just made an account, I can confirm that many people on Clubhouse are actually using fake names and sock puppets despite the stated rules. (Like, very obvious fake names, not "John Doe".) It’s surely a privileged space -and I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually do a crackdown on fake names, or use it as an excuse to drop people - but these are things that can be avoided. Key notes:
  1. Use a fake name that sounds real-ish, if you’d like to be cunning about it.
  2. Register a Google Voice number so that your phone stays even more secret.

Anyone still got any invites? I want to be in the cool kids club
posted by Freelance Demiurge at 8:35 PM on March 2, 2021

I've got a couple left, although you can be sure any club I'm in isn't the cool kids club. Anyway, if you'd like, MeMail me your mobile phone number.

MeMail me if you want an invite. I get three new invites every week.
