Ten Years of Wild Online Purchasing June 29, 2021 5:50 PM Subscribe
On this day in 2011, my bank went from using debit cards that only worked at ATMs, to using branded cards that literally worked everywhere, including online. My first purchase was a $5 membership on MetaFilter.
It's hard to believe that it's only been 10 years ago that the bank finally made the leap into modern reality. That first online purchase has led to thousands more, but not many have been as long-lasting, or deeply satisfying, as that very first purchase.
Of course I had lurked for years, trying to talk myself into mailing a check or something, but it was the Internet, and it didn't really seem real. Suddenly, all the corners of the Earth were mine.
I just wanted to thank everybody for the guided tour. Please continue!
