Am I a Special Snowflake - active users question February 19, 2022 11:33 PM   Subscribe

I just passed the mark of over 10,000 answers being favorited by others in AskMeFi - a meaningless landmark that made me unreasonably happy. That made me wonder how many others have accomplished the same (over 10,000 favorited by others) and just more generally what is known about the most active users in the community.

❄️👑‼️💖Congratulations, metahawk! I'm unreasonably happy that anyone is reasonably or unreasonably happy! Here's to the next 10,000! 🥂

If 351 users favor this comment, I'll join you in the 10K Club.

(That's not going to happen.)

(Also: Congrats on achieving your meaningless landmark!)

How do you know how many people have favourited your answers vs. other comments on the site? I can see my total favourites, but I don't know how to break them down by sub-site.
posted by jacquilynne at 7:15 AM on February 20, 2022

I don’t know how to do that either!
posted by warriorqueen at 7:58 AM on February 20, 2022

On your profile page, "Favorited by others." Then click on "comments" and filter to show comments from AskMetafilter.
posted by cooker girl at 8:05 AM on February 20, 2022

Oh wait, that doesn't JUST show favorited, does it? I guess I don't know how to, either!

How do you know how many people have favourited your answers vs. other comments on the site?

A check of metahawk's profile page suggests that they have found an efficient workaround to that problem, but one that might be difficult for others to adopt.

When you hit 20,000 favorites they send you a copy of Metafilter: The Board Game.

It's just Monopoly but all the Community Chest cards are inside jokes.

If I were to make some generalizations about the users on that list, I would say that they're mostly fairly heavy site users (and AskMe users specifically), a lot of them are women, and they give very good advice.

(I'm on the list of people with the most best answers, but pretty far down.)

Hello. Welcome to the club. I was thinking recently about how it seems like I use this site as a way of finding out what people are thinking about, and finding out if what they're thinking is pretty much in line with what I'm thinking, and for that it performs a critical function for me, I'm not sure what I'd do without it, so thanks again.

DirtyOldTown, no me on that list? I have 12502 if my profile is to be believed.

(Oh! Just re-read the OP and am confused - is that list just for Ask, or across the whole site? I think mine would be overwhelmingly in the Green but I guess mayyybe 500+ are on the blue which would push me under the 10K for Ask).

Anyway. Congratulations, metahawk! Ten thousand moments of someone thinking "Oh, yes, that's good advice" at your words :) A fine contribution to the universe.

Glad I'm not a "heavy user"

Only 774 here, but I only post about mental illness or alcohol, so uh... yeah I'm really limited in content. Maybe I need to branch out.

Or just be here longer?

(Also, random thought, I think my 82 year old mother would really grove here - I wonder if inviting her is a good idea?)

Yeah, that list isn't complete - I remember that dhartung used to be the top favorited user for a stretch, and he has ~14k favorites when i check his profile.
posted by Mid at 4:18 PM on February 20, 2022

Oh I see, the numbers are for Ask only. When you do the whole site the top favorites are six figures!

And today I learned about infodumpster. Now I can answer these questions on my own. Thank you Miko and DirtyOldTown!

To paraphrase Linus Pauling: one way to have a lot of favorites is to write a lot of comments/answers. The Bandwidth Reading The Room Prize Brrp for those with high [#favorites ÷ #answers]?

Geeez, I can't get over how impressive this is! All of you. I've been commenting on AskMe for over 15 years and I'm not even halfway to 10k. Well done!

(Side thought: I'm now doubting the value of my comments.)

I've got 14,000 something favorites which I got super excited about the 10,000 make and did something little for myself (even though I'm not on the infodump list ;.; ). Don't know how useful that is or not as a measure but I hope it means I say something useful every now and then.

Even if I am a terrible with spelling and I go back to my comments and get very annoyed my brain refuses to see mistakes until 3 hours later. I just decide it shows I am a imperfect person and keep going forward.

Congrats! Every favorite should be a little celebration imho.

(Side thought: I'm now doubting the value of my comments.)

And I'm wondering if I'm spending too much time on this site.

(I was surprised to make the list and am absolutely grateful for all of the favorites. The comment of mine that got the most was one pointing out that Delta airlines was using "B.1.617.2 variant" instead of "Delta variant," which is what everyone else was using at the time.)

Same, and for what it's worth, iamkimiam, despite my longevity, given my crap memory I only have a handful of usernames I associate with anything beyond "that name looks familiar," but you are one of the folks I think of as having interesting and helpful answers.

iamkimiam, imo this is your greatest contribution to the site and I do not mean that lightly.

I think more would be on the list if you could combine all the user names individuals have used.

I'm more obsessed with my ratio of comments to favorites. I have and do in some situations say a lot, and some of that seems popular, but recently I've been far more interested in where I say something and where it matters when I speak out.
posted by Stanczyk at 5:49 PM on February 21, 2022 [2 favorites]

I am having odd feelings about this. I guess the occasional comment towards me that's critical of some misunderstood comment or other might be ... outweighed? Or maybe I just spend too much time on this? But sometimes I feel like maybe I'm helping someone?

Oh well, back to trying to figure out how to clean out the wet/dry vac.

Thanks? You're welcome?

I admire your answers - you get to the heart of the matter, you’re thoughtful and pragmatic, fair to all parties while focusing on the the asker’s needs, compassionate and non-judgemental; your answers are precise and service-minded (no fluff, no ego), and clearly drawn from a breadth of experience and understanding… I aspire to be the sort of person who thinks this way and can offer that. I think your economical, understated style flies under the radar sometimes, you deserve more favourites than 10k.

(I’m not weird :/ well, maybe a little, but it’s unrelated, I mean I’m not stalking you, haha. I have occasionally gone back to questions we both have answered, and been really struck by your replies.)
