Hey, let's chat August 22, 2023 11:23 AM   Subscribe

AKA we’re temporarily removing the chatfilter restrictions on Ask Metafilter IF you make a donation to the site, as part of the 2023 MetaFilter Fundraiser!

Caveats: If the question breaks the law it will be removed. If the question violates the Content Policy or Guidelines it will likely be removed. So chat away and ask open ended questions, but the posts will be still be moderated, if mods determine it's needed. Basically, don't be a jerk and everything will be fine. Refunding of donations if a question is deleted will be done on a case by case basis, but we don't anticipate removing any questions.

Otherwise, now's the time to ask that open ended question that's rattling around in your brain. Let it out! Wondering about what could have been done to fix Season 8 of Game of Thrones or that outfit you love actually matches or who else loves the peanut butter and pickle sandwiches? Ask away!

Chatfilter ends at midnight EST on 15 September.

Donations are on the honor system, because we trust you.

That's it, let's have some fun!

ooh this feels a little chaotic, love it!

Should we indicate in the ask that it's chatty for fundraising reasons?

How about making the first sentence in the body of every such post be "#fundraiser2023"? Or something else if someone has a better idea!

How much do we have to donate to ask a question?

I stuck "#fundraiser2023" in the tags because putting a hashtag not in the tags felt Wrong

Please let the answer be "$20, same as in town."

How much do we have to donate to ask a question?

As much as you are comfortable with.

If I donate, will I be allowed to threadsit?

At $5 a comment, yes. If that’s too much, then whatever you feel is appropriate!

Instead of a chat filter question, can I go back to some of my old questions and comment "Didn't you people read the goddamn question?" to some of the replies.

I would pay an amount of money that most people might think unreasonable if I could do this on a regular basis and not be banned or have my comments deleted.

No.

However, I did create chatfiltery question and you are free to post that comment in my question if you send in donations.

I'm trusting you to donate if you comment. Please don't betray my trust like Twitter did.

I would never betray anyone's trust.

Except that one guy. He had it coming.

Narrator voice: They did not.

I assume this means chattier responses are ok until sept 15? (not intending to be a clown but sometimes I want to respond to something but its a little outside of "answering the question")

This is a fun and creative way to fundraise and raise awareness about the fundraiser at the same time.

We need to be a little careful to not created a tiered service where people pay to be chattier, so be more cautious in this direction.

I love this goofy idea generally.

Since no one involved has answered yet, I would just suggest that this is has not been implied in any way outside of the tagged fundraiser chatfilter ask posts. Within those posts, clearly chat is being encouraged. As far as I can tell, aside from those clearly marked posts, there is no change in Ask guidelines and responses should be answers to questions asked.

Yes, per Jessamyn’s advice, let’s keep chatty answers to the chatty questions, thanks!

I was expecting to hate this but I actually love it. We are a bunch of chatty weirdos, and I am totally here for it (briefly).

Chatfilter ends at midnight EST on 15 September.

EST does NOT mean "Eastern Time". Use "Eastern" or "ET" instead, all year round, and avoid this common error. Google "EST vs EDT".

"Midnight" is still ambiguous because it could be the very beginning of Sept 15th, or the very end. Use 11:59pm or 12:01am instead (or, if you reeaally want it to be right at midnight, 11:59:59pm or 12:00:01am) so that it's clear which one you mean.

I would argue EST is unambiguous and refers to UTC-5 always, whereas ET is a local time and confusing when establishing a point in time everyone can refer to.

Unfortunately, as people use these interchangeably, even when it's not the case (as it is now), EST therefore becomes ambiguous. It is sad making and so I default to ET, myself, year-round.

I would prefer that people give a city instead of some initials, e.g. "noon Honolulu time," but I recognize I might be alone in finding that clearer.

Jessamyn Time. Midnight, wherever Jessamyn is, or wants to be.
posted by theora55 at 2:23 PM on August 28, 2023 [5 favorites]

I would definitely find it clearer if all times were given in Honolulu time.

Dang-near every state, Poland, and NZ has a Franklin, so it's probably best to go with Franklin time, no? Even Manitoba has one, so Canada is covered. It's so inclusive.

I was ready to be real mad about this Franklin Time idea, but turns out my state has a Franklin! I see no other potential issues with this proposal.

I've loved reading all the chatfilter questions, even posted one of my own and it was so much fun reading the answers to my question. And everyone's questions have been interesting, not super chatty like "what's the best pizza you've ever eaten" but things I was actually curious about.

I hope this will be an annual thing...it's been fun and it nudged me to donate.

Thanks to everyone who donated! (I am not saying this in any kind of official capacity. I don't have an official capacity. I used to be on the Steering Committee but it's still On Hold, and anyway my term is long over now. I can still thank people who donated though! The best kind of thanks are the unofficial and random kind!)
