Or maybe he's been havin' a tall glass of moloko-plus, oh my brothers, to sharpen him up and get him ready for a little of the old Metatalk ultraviolence...

Umm, anyone care to argue from the devil's advocate position on this one?

yup...that spirit foam post still sucked--but i love the new titles/headers! ; >

Wouldn't it be neat if there were some magical way you could contact someone like Matt directly with thanks rather than posting it here? Maybe the person who invents that could call it, I dunno, e-mail.

Or maybe I'm just cranky 'cause I haven't been drinking.

mefi-seppuku?

A rather decent hypothesis. Or maybe I just need to be drinking.

As one who also tried (and failed) to make a dramatic departure, I'll do the honors. jcterminal, if you don't want to contribute any more, that's fine. You're welcome to if you want, of course; but if not, then thanks for all that you've given.

On the other hand, if you (the universal "you") really don't want to contribute any more, than you can just stop typing - wait, that's what I said a couple months ago. Yeah, I guess it doesn't usually work when you actually announce it.

jcterminal, please remember that every meta thread bumps another self-aggrandizing thread off of the front page. Damn you for your goodwill, DAMN YOU!!!!!!

I said something to this effect recently. It's worth repeating--thanks Matt.

Can I call Jcterminal's user number and baseball shirt? Or do those just get retired?
posted by PinkStainlessTail at 7:58 AM on November 13, 2002

Oy! When I clicked on jctermninal's user page, I didn't see the whole thing. My bad.

Jcterminal, it's been wonderful having you and your thoughts here. While I, personally, would like you to stay, I can understand why you might feel that you've been here long enough. As you know, the door is always open...

I'll miss you.

Are these goodbye messages always considered bad form? If I ever take a vacation from MetaFilter, I'd like to announce it, if only to keep myself from backsliding.

I personally find these announcements done on MeTa cringeworthy (but fun to mock). A note on one's personal blog (ala Evanizer) is much more classy. As is just plain silence, like when Quonsar took a few months off.

Oh, I don't know. I thought this one was pretty tasteful and well-done (compared to the bunnyfire example, anyway.)

I think it's the whole "mark my passing, Metafilter" thing that gets to me. JCTerminal certainly knows how to send an e-mail to Matt. this thread is here for the users.

I find the 'good-bye MeFi, you'll miss me' threads pretty annoying. something in your profile, combined with a link to a blog entry should be sufficient for those that care about you. jc's been a pretty prominent member for a while, but frankly the only person whose absence needs an explanation is matt's. Especially when you have this written in the comments of your livejournal:

hey that's cool, but still i'm gone. it's just not the same. i've loaded the site once a day every day for the past few months... and it's just.... ugh... i go there, make a snarky comment, and that's it. i don't interact... nothing there interests me anymore... even metatalk doesn't do anything for me anymore.

'if it stops being fun, stop doing it.'
at least i didn't leave one of those stupid 'GOODBYE EVERYONE' notes.

I don't get it, jc.

I guess the work for jcterminal in having fun, was no fun.
Remember jcterminal, Meta-Filter, it vibrates {{{fun}}}.

PS, spell check wanted to change your name to ceremonial. So on that line Good Luck jcterminal.

"I might get fun out of finding out why they're not.
I'm not supposed to get fun out of working out why
they're not.
But there is even some fun in pretending to them I'm not
having fun finding out why they're not."

Well, I don't know why we are dissing the dude, all he said was "Thanks, Matt"....I mean for crying out loud, Matt could have sent him a pony.

Konolia:Well, I don't know why we are dissing the dude, all he said was "Thanks, Matt"

No, all he typed was "Thanks, Matt." All he said was "Hey everyone I'm starting a MeTa thread addressed to Matt rather than just sending him an e-mail because I want you all to know that I'm leaving and that you should be sad and maybe beg me to stay." It's just an understated version of Bunnyfire's horribly self-indulgent "Can I have a moment of your time post?" which I'm sure is linked in here somewhere. If you haven't read it you really should. It shows why people really dislike this kind of thing.

(Or are you joking?)

I think if there is a pony or a pancake in the sentence, it always follows that the sentence is not to be taken seriously.

Unless there really is a pony. ;-)
