Wall Street Journal Mention November 18, 2002 9:00 PM   Subscribe

MeFi in the WSJ!

While the online version is only accessible to paid subscribers, the WSJ today (Monday) did a special section on the Internet ("How to ... entertain children ... search the web ... find friends ... etc.). One was "Find a Blog". MeFi was mentioned two or three times ... in fact it was the Blog recommmended as the one to start with (and in fact the first one mentioned in the article itself).

Kudos Matt. Yet another in a growing list of public recognitions of your skill and committment.

(After reading the nasty public psychosis of Mr. "Fourth time I've been banned from MeFi" ... it seemed worthwhile to mention this article).

Here's an online version of it, thanks to waxpancake. Blogroots also mentioned, amongst about 40 or so other blog-related sites.

Yes, I prefer my pancakes waxy.

I was impressed to see the online WSJ article system recognizes URLs and made them live. Few print publications (none even come to mind) get that right when they go online.

Offbeat items on "Virtual Legos" and "French McDonald's Ads" might appear on the same day as weightier topics in the news.

I don't know what to think about that sentence though. Seems like they're representing news as the focus of the site and everything else as gravy.

They obviously don't read Me-Talk. I'll bet they think this is a discussion site as well.

"Once I find a few I like, I branch out from there, based on the places they talk about or link on their side bars, and I've quickly grown a list of 20 to 30 sites I read daily and enjoy immensely," says Matthew Haughey, the creator of MetaFilter.

Wouldn't it be super if Matt somehow be cajoled, entreated or arm-twisted to reveal this list?

I think the real Matt-related question here is whether Portugal and San Francisco are far enough apart.

you could post something on meta, take a poll and through in some stolie and Richard Brautigan.

Not to diminish our esteemed host, but I think the kudos on Metafilter should go to all of us, not just Matt.

You give credit to the painter, not the maker of the canvas or the manufacturer of the paint.

Is it the baseball players, or the owners of the stadiums who get the applause?

Don't we make Metafilter what it is or isn't?

But, for the sake of non divisiveness, HOORAY FOR MATT!

Is MeFi taking new users again? It'll be like September all over again...

I was tickled that LABlogs.com (along with DFWBlogs which is also run by mefiers, I believe) got a very brief mention too, does anyone know if this showed up in the print edition as well?

Yes, jonah, DFWBlogs is run by our own LeiaS

Yeah jonah, it was in the print edition yesterday, in a pull-out suppliment about the "best way to..."

And it goes without saying that I shouldn't be the sole recipient of any kudos, the site is what everyone makes it.

It's probably half that, half the fact that they're repurposing content from a decades-old editorial system that doesn't even know what a hyperlink is.

Previous WSJ mention of MeFi also noted here, for what it's worth. See also that thread's last comment -- it seems MeFi has a special place in the hearts of at least a few Journal staffers.
