I can't explain it, but you better get used to it.

Another item for the FAQ, if it's not in there already.

Matt's got things set up so that anything.metafilter.com resolves to the site.

An example....

Also : met4filter.org and http://anything.notalentassclown.org do the same. It's magic!

So... this means that Matt owns the internet?

How DNS works. Ctrl-F for 'subdomain'.

i know how dns , subdomains , etc work .

what i'm asking is why 'assclown' as opposed to computer1.metafilter.com or retlifatem.metafilter.com ?

what is the significance of being an assclown , eh ?

It's from the movie Office Space. Singer Michael Bolton is the no talent ass clown. There's a clip here.

I guess Matt likes Office Space. Or doesn't like Michael Bolton. I've wondered why he hasn't registered www.jumptoconclusionsmatt.com.

Tom Smykowski: It's a "Jump to Conclusions Mat"! You see, you have this mat, with different CONCLUSIONS written on it that you could JUMP TO!
Michael Bolton: That is the worst idea I've ever heard!
Samir: Yes, this is horrible, this idea!

Thanks, iconomy - I ♥ Office Space!

Or doesn't like Michael Bolton.
Talk about shooting fish in a barrel.
Which is better--I ? Michael Bolton or I ? Michael Bolton?
There really should be an appropriate [I] hate symbol.

Hi, iconomy!

Which is better--I Michael Bolton or I ♠ Michael Bolton?

mishaco : anyone can read MeFi at the URL of their choosing, is the point, which I think you're missing here. It's totally arbitrary.

You can use MeFi at mishaco.metafilter.com if you want, just as I could use stavrosthewonderchicken.metafilter.com or cheesemakesmynipplessing.metafilter.com or anything I want.

Of course, if you then follow any links from mishaco.metafilter.com, the referrer will be 'mishaco.metafilter.com'. One or more of our thousands of fellow MeFites was using assclown.metafilter.com, and must have clicked through from your profile, I guess. That's it.
