Does Metafilter have a status page? January 25, 2003 12:08 PM   Subscribe

In the category of "give-Matt-more-work", does metafilter have a status page for when it goes down? If it doesn't, I'm thinking that it would be a nice feature for those of us (most of us, I'm guessing) who are chomping at the bit to find out what might be ailing metafilter and when it will come back online. Of course, the status page would have to live on a different server so that it doesn't go down at the same time.

Why not mirror the site on another server, so when it goes down, it really doesn't go down?

Why not put the database on a seperate server?

Because you need another server.

You don't need your own server for a status weblog - you could just set up a blogspot account.

Already discussed and planned here, btw.

Try this. If you like it, you could bookmark it.

Thanks iconomy and lynsey. It was such an obvious idea that I knew it couldn't be original, but I didn't find it any searches I made. And we can always count on Matt for thinking of it first and making plans to create it. That Matt, he's the best. [/fawning adulation]

I should setup status.metafilter.com on my home dsl box, but that has downtime too. I'll set it up though.

What's the eta on pony.metafilter.com?

No, no. You all are not thinking big enough. Quite clearly what we need is a series of beacons on the tops of the tallest towers in every major metropolis. These lights will shine across the evening sky any time the server is in trouble. We can call it, the Matt Signalâ„¢.

Of course, how you call for help during the day is another matter.

You're all re-inventing the wheel. If MeFi downtime isn't enough to activate the Emergency Broadcast System, then what is?

Matt, thanks again for being willing to do a status blog. It would be more definitive than the ever-changing wiki, though there are some good links on that page.

My approach to find out the status of the system:

1.) Go to www.metafilter.com
2.) If it's there, the server's up.
3.) If I get an error page, the server's down.

Easy and simple, and no more work for Matt.

(If the server's down when I try to access the site, I shrug and do something else. Besides, what's preferable about checking it on another site first? That's one more site to add to my already-huge bookmark file.

What if it's a scheduled down time with an approximate time to return to normal function, vidiot? Then you wouldn't have to spend precious time checking mefi every five minutes.

Is that the problem we are solving?

Who knows, it looks like you're arguing about something which Matt's already decided to do.

You mean...

There are other things to do?
