Is this type of publicity good though? Given the recent events and decisions related to copyright, do we really want those who would like to see all CD copiers burned in hell to have MeFi brought to their attention in this way?

I remember sending out swap discs. I just don't remember the part where people sent them back.

Shame, because ebk makes a damned fine mix.
I did cheese out of the last one (long story), and owe a few CDs. Is it too late ot send them out?

adampsyche: I'm on your swap list (for MefiSwap II), and I don't think it's too late to send them out. Better late than never, right?

I wonder if the fact that every single effing copyright attorney in the world reads the New York Times is a bad thing in this particular instance?

Considering that all the music traded in CD swaps in the history of the planet adds up to maybe 1% of a day's worth of transfer at Napster at its peak.. I think the lawyers have better things to do.

All the same, probably for the best that the Swap isn't officially endorsed by the site....
They can take our swap, but they'll never take our filter.

Sarge, vraxoin (and probably others) - everyone's referring to it, but nobody in the thread has yet linked to the off-site swap site yet. I didn't do the last one (or has it been two already?), but had a very good experience with the first one.

I'll second that emotion. EBK's mixes are the mutt's nuts.
Oh, and you know who else does a kick ass mix? MetaFilter's Marquis. Don't miss his mix guidelines. His list should be arcwelded across the back of every CD burner.

well i went to the swap page but i cant sign up,
without a doubt my cd's would have been the finest things the world has ever seen.
I only let an mp3 onto my hard drive if it is of outstanding quality anyway and i have a regular cull of shite.
so the only rule for this is: do not let poor mp3's onto your hard drive.
if anyone has a better segue than the one between the pogues summer in siam and bob marleys jammin, then bring on up here for an ass whuppin.

After reading Marquis' guidelines, I am now so intimidated that I will never burn a cd for anyone again. Them's a lot of rules.
My husband won't even listen to the last cd I mixed for him. It has "weird bands" on it (in other words, bands that are not either The Beatles or Grateful Dead). Gah.

Well, after viewing Marquis' rules, the nerve that I was getting up to join in one of the mixes has completely evaporated. I am not worthy.

Fortunately, Marquis's rules are not binding on MeFi Swap participants. No one would ever swap if they were!
Anyway, FYI: Sign-ups for the next quarter are set to open on February 15th, but as always, joining the announcement list (swapnews-l) is the best way to be advised of what's going on. In addition, if you were a part of last quarter's swap and you haven't yet filled out the survey, please do! I could really use more feedback to get a proper list of those To Be Banned From Future Swappage.

Appropriate lines for non-registers:
There are perhaps thousands of other mix makers who burn CD's for a circle of friends or online acquaintances. They are part of a thriving culture of mix swaps, or "burning circles," as Mr. von Lohmann and his friends call them. Some of these can be quite big. One swap involving members of a group Weblog called MetaFilter attracted about 260 participants, each of whom was required to send a mix to five others.
