Idiotic wannabe hipsters slinging Moby insults in 3.... 2.... 1.....

Nice one heather. That made me smile.

I hate to say it, but that picture looks 'shopped.

I don't know...he likes to take pics of himself in reflective surfaces.

eyeballkid: I may be idiotic, but I gotta say that was one boring fish story.

It's a mammal.

The picture absolutely is 'shopped. Considering the angle of the mirror, he would actually have to be in the rest of the picture for the angles to work out. The silver wall of that stall in the background should show up in the mirror as well, but clearly doesn't. Compare the size of Moby's head to the size of the stall.

So, Moby's got a big head?
posted by Mid at 12:17 PM on April 16, 2003

While it could be faked, the angles, colors, and lighting all look plausable to me and I can't see why anyone would go to the extreme trouble of producing this. I know heather and friends have talked to Moby's contacts, and I'm sure they'd hear from them asap if this photo was a fake uploaded by an imposter.

Here's a larger version from Moby's site. The detail in the larger version makes it look like it's a double exposure, but it's hard to tell. The detail you can see in the mirror in this version matches the detail in the rest of the bathroom, e.g. the bricks of the wall. Now that I look at it more closely, it looks like he photoshopped himself out of the picture on the leftside. You can still see a faint outline of his head and maybe his hands at the bottom. I think it's two pictures 'shopped together for an interesting effect.

monju, I think you got it right. His right hand seems to be the one holding the camera, which would put him where that smudginess is.

You and Shaggy head down to Moby's blog while me and Velma canvas the Lower East Side for leads!

*rips off moby mask*

and i would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for you meddling kids!!!!
posted by amberglow at 2:57 PM on April 16, 2003

yeah, I think it's photoshopped as well. It's almost as if the camera is too far from the mirror to account for the size of him. It's almost as if he'd have to be standing in front of the person who actually took the picture.

and why is this in metatalk?

MetaFilter was full, so the thread overflowed into here.

i think the mirror is a lot smaller than it looks.
posted by th3ph17 at 3:57 PM on April 16, 2003

I think there is a second, and maybe even third shooter involved.
posted by Hackworth at 4:05 PM on April 16, 2003

If you look in the bottom right hand corner of the mirror, I think that you can se a grassy knoll.

Also, if you listen closely to the photo you can hear Michael Moore booing.

dg, Pinwheel was just following up on a previous metafilter thread.

Pinwheel was just following up on a previous metafilter thread.

Then it should either be in the previous thread or a new MetaFilter post. But it shouldn't be in MetaTalk.

Moby's from Connecticut, ya know.

And I was with a girl, who was...with a girl who was with moby. It's so sordid.
posted by jonmc at 7:27 PM on April 16, 2003

i think what's throwing people off is that it's a really tiny mirror? i thought it looked fake at first too.

interesting narcissistic two-fer: heather for expecting some celeb to submit to her site; and the celeb for actually submitting -- a photo of himself looking into a mirror.
posted by donkeyschlong at 7:54 PM on April 16, 2003

Moby's from Connecticut, ya know.

Not only that, but he was in a hardcore band called "The Vatican Commandos" back then too, at least according to this book.
posted by Ufez Jones at 8:13 PM on April 16, 2003

Good question vidiot - I guess I just couldn't resist the combination of someone caring enough that someone else convinced someone else to take a photo of himself in a mirror to post it and the fact that it was posted to MetaTalk in the first place.

No serious insult intended, btw, just a bit of a poke.

so jonmc slept with moby?

If Moby put a photo of his wang on the penisblog, I bet blogdex would explode.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 9:30 PM on April 16, 2003

*sigh*

i haven't told anyone here this yet, but i figure it's time:

i am a photoshop expert. it's like i'm the bruce lee of photoshopping, in other words.

moby hired me to make this picture. he paid me $5,000. but here's the hitch: if anyone finds out i made the picture, instead of it being the genuine article, i don't get the money. so . . . . can we keep this thing on the down-low, as the kids say? if you all email your bank account numbers, i will give you all a $100 tip. just shut the hell up about it. i was totally wasted when i did this. do you understand? drunkola. i can't believe you fools have nothing better to do than criticize my work. be kind! shush, shush.

Wonderful. I have now heard a coherent sentence using the words "Moby" and "wang."

It would have been better if it was "Moby" and "dick".

OH MY GOD I HATE MOBY.
posted by xmutex at 10:37 AM on April 17, 2003

I don't think it's been wrangled with excessively in Photoshop. It looks like he used a low-light setting, and perhaps moved the camera or himself a little bit as he was taking the photo to get some of that smudgy effect. The light has that sweet intensity you get with low-light settings on digicams - most people have fun taking pictures of car brake lights or sparklers or candle light and whatnot, because of the smudge and blur and streak. At most, it looks like he might've tweaked contrast, and maybe a little color balancing.

Yay! I love the Mirror Project.

jonmc: Was he bald, ya know, all over?
posted by brittney at 4:27 PM on April 17, 2003

Actually, I think that there are two mirrors involved... one small one that we see in the picture, which the camera was pointed at, and another one, which Moby was actually looking into at the time and reflecting off of into the little mirror.
The moving lights are a result of the two-mirror thing, and the fact that the flash stopped the motion.
