Secret URL for work filters August 21, 2003 8:29 PM   Subscribe

Lots of people have complained about MetaTalk being banned as a "gaming site" so I created a new secret URL for MetaTalk too.

Cool. Almost wish I worked somewhere where faceless people dictated what sites I could visit, just so I could take advantage of it ;-)

dg, from now on you are not allowed to visit metatalk.metafilter.com, www.kuro5hin.org or www.ratemyrack.com.

Oh, and my.work.has.lame.filters.for.metatalk.too.metafilter.com is right out.

There, happy?

Thanks fvw - everything is better when it is forbidden ;-)

I'm a bit concerned about the actual URL that's been set up. I don't work anywhere that has filters (the best they can do is block port IRC ports so I have to jump through loops to get to #mefi...there's always a way), but I imagine that if one's resident IT guy is scanning the proxy logs and sees "my.work.has.lame.filters.for.metatalk" they might be a bit concened. "reports.metatalk" might be a bit less noticeable?

On the other hand - would any wildcard *.metatalk do the same job?

Naw, it doesn't work out that way. I was being cheeky when selecting the domain. What sounds more professional but is still clearly funny?

coffee.is.for.closers.metafilter.com
really.important.charts.and.graphs.metafilter.com
maximizing.ROI.at.metafilter.com
the.7.habits.of.highly.effective.employees.metafilter.com
powerpoint.tips.metafilter.com
my.red.stapler.metafilter.com
everyone.in.khakis.metafilter.com

I'd be happy to setup two bogus metafilter subdomains that seemed on the surface like someone cared about their job.

Is "fucking the dog" a uniquely Canadian expression for slacking? I don't know that I've ever heard it in the US.
posted by Armitage Shanks at 9:59 AM on August 22, 2003

Really? I've even heard of people filling in time sheets thusly:

Looking for the dog: 2 hours
Chasing for the dog: 2 hours
Catching for the dog: 2 hours
Fucking for the dog: 2 hours
posted by timeistight at 10:16 AM on August 22, 2003

"Screw the pooch" is American:
The phrase screw the pooch, meaning to mess up, commit a grievous error, was made famous in Tom Wolfe's book The Right Stuff. The phrase is a euphemism from US military slang. The original expression was fuck the dog and meant to waste time, to loaf on the job.

Fuck the dog dates appears in print for the first time in 1935, but in 1918 another euphemistic version, feeding the dog, appears. The original sense dates to 1918. Over the decades, the meaning shifted to the current sense and the screw the pooch wording took the place of the original phrasing.
But the term is "clearly speciesist."
posted by kirkaracha at 10:18 AM on August 22, 2003

Here it just means wasting time. What about "so hard done by," is that just Canadian?
posted by timeistight at 10:23 AM on August 22, 2003

But when you try to post, preview goes to metatalk.metafilter.com so while we can read MeTa, we can't POST to MeTa if we're filtered.

Unless you administer the filter :P

Hmm - my sneaky damn IT department at work has blocked off everything with .metwafilter.com at the end. They'd blocked off www.metafiler.com ages ago, but I'd been using a work-sounding start to defeat them. Now however they seem to have got wise - so I'm limited to home use [sob]

Yeah. It’s just that we’re putting new coversheets on all the TPS reports before they go out now. So I’d really appreciate it if you could just do that. Right. Remember to do that form now on. That’d be great.
posted by NortonDC at 12:19 PM on August 23, 2003

insomnyuk, most filters block proxy sites since they are often used to circumvent the filter.
posted by DBAPaul at 1:24 PM on August 23, 2003

I'm very late to this party, but I'd like to point out a very elegant proxy solution y6y6y6 pointed out in this meta thread. You can use google language tools to translate english to english by screwing with the url - instant proxy!
