can we all just agree not to pee all over external sites of meFi users? it's really obnoxious and extremely petty.
What's this about, aside from the insomnyuk/skallas set-to?

y2karl (or someone posting under that name) recently wrote something dumb on someone's blog, in relation to a comment they wrote on MetaFilter about y2karl. So someone said "y2karl is a poopy head" at metafilter and it looks like y2karl said nothing on metafilter but instead went to the other person's site to say "nuh uh, you're a poopy head".
I ended up deleting all the dumb comments (the original one included) because they derailed the thread.
I agree with the "grow up, people" all around.

I did it to xmutex a couple of days ago. It was extremely petty. It was rude and immature and I am totally ashamed of myself. He meant me no harm and I did him a great disservice. I wrote him nasty emails and he wrote me back. I apologized profusely. Or at least I thought I did. I thought he accepted my apology. I have the emails and I will post them if allowed. Why bring it up after all that? That, to me, is petty, too.

He didn't write back nasty emails, by the way--I falsely accused him of derailing my thread and causing a pile on. It wasn't his intention, he was just funning. I said I was sorry then. I thought we had gotten it settled.

if i may withdraw my 'whatever' after reading the posts.
First skallas is a dumbass - most people by the time they reach about 16 or so have learnt how to deal with people who piss them off, my recommended tactic is to IGNORE the person. His constant whining is to be quite honest fucking pathetic.
The y2karl post, kicked off with a few comments on his use of 'pop up thingies' (yeah we all agree they suck, except y2k that is). After which y2karl acted like a arrogant prick for the rest of the post. Hey most of us know who pekar is, if you want to discuss a movie that you are really into, why not try imdb, it's fantastic, i promise you.
the self-importance that some people on metafilter attach to themelves and their posts is quite funny. yeah, i know we are all guilty, cause posting is the same as listening to your own voice 90% of the time, but sometimes it gets outta hand.

Back not so long ago when I was more frequently insulting to GWB and America in general at Metafilter, I would often see incoming hits almost immediately after making such a coment at my site coming from my profile here, if I cared to look, often followed by threats and insults, generally anonymous but obviously from MetFites or MeFi readers, in various comment threads there. It was always disappointing, but never entirely surprising.

Here's an explanation I owe everyone: I manage an apartment building. It's not fancy but it's clean and well kept. The owner is a great guy but a bit on the cranky side. We have a horrible vacancy rate here. In person, I am incredibly laid back and don't get on people when they fall behind in rent like I should. I don't yell.
I rented an apartment to a couple of barely twenty fuckwits, who, long story short, are managing to get their asses evicted. That's 7 years they won't be able to rent where they do a credit check. Do they care? Not apparently.
Another 20 something couple with a kid just split up and the guy split town last week on the day before he was supposed to catch up on his late rent. Because of the first set of fuckwits, the owner--who's a great guy--is fed up and taking no prisoners. I gave a 3 day to the kid who was out of town. It's up. He just came in town and left me a note saying he'd pay on the 28th. It doesn't work that way.
He doesn't pay by Monday, it's the rent plus attorney's fees to stay. Big buckeros. The first set of fuckwits can get a hold of the girlfriend who moved out with her kid. She's on the lease, too. But they aren't bothering to... All these kids have new cellphones and I can't get the numbers from their friends or information.
I seem like an arrogant touchy asshole here but in real life, I'm a laid back stay-out-of-your-face hands off guy. I am trying to get these idiots to realize they are taking down their friends with them but they just don't get it. I have lost it and finally screamed. They show me attitude. I am trying to get a hold of these other poor kids--the split up couple--because they have a baby. They have so much to lose. I am going fucking nuts I am so stressed out.
I go out and badger all their friends when they come by, who just dummy up and don't listen 'cause I'm the Man, and come in and go online to unwind. I go out again when I see someone who knows them--do this off and on all day for the last three days. I can't get a hold of anyone. I don't know where his new girlfriend lives, let alone the one that moved out. I am frazzled and worried and wound up tighter than a drumhead. It has come out here in a very major way.
Now I have to go yell at assholes #1 again so I might be able to save not quite assholes #2 from the same fate. I hate renting to kids--we only did because there's been so few people looking--I hate it. I am never doing it again.
My point?
There is always a back story, on why people are the way they are here.
Just sayin'...

Here's a story I heard Robbie Robertson tell at conference:
The Band played at Watkins Glen, which was a post-Woodstock music festival. Watkins Glen, like most of the festivals of that era, was held in a field in the pouring rain.
The stage at this event was quite high – over six feet – and during the Band's set kids kept trying to climb out of the mud onto the stage. Bill Graham, the impresario, would run over and step on the kids fingers every time he saw them getting purchase on the stage. When Robertson called him on it Graham said, "You can't coddle them forever, Robbie."

Damnit, I just signed a lease on an apartment. Why didn't you tell me about all these vacancies? Having y2karl as an apartment manager would be awesome. All hearing like Jimmy Rogers or like Son House or something playing at 2am, all researching long posts about late 19th-century Christian Diabolism or like the fascinating history of the velocipede together. 25-page, extensively cross-referenced memos in the mailbox whenever there was a fumigation notice. Oh, hell yes.
But basically, yeah, it is not cool to take the fight to someone else's doorstep. Keep it on metafilter, I say. But also it is not cool to make a big deal out of it when it happens. It's not like anybody has stabbed anybody else with a knife.
