I'm afraid Matt can't hear any of you. He's currently on an alcohol-and-amphetamine-powered bender through the streets of San Francisco, screaming about "lizard kings" and "octopus gardens" and openly challenging Death to games of chess. (Best two out of three, winner takes all.)
When he comes to in a few days, and if he remembers who he is or that there is a Metafilter, and if he checks this thread, then of course: Happy birthday, Matt. We wish you all the best, and a speedy return to sanity!

Hey, Wendell: do not disparage our greatest achievement, you unspeakable renegade. Matt should be so lucky as to reach our senatorial age and still have the energy to keep posting here, with no loss of gravitas. And still - perhaps inexplicably - not feel like shutting it down, as is the wont of the younger, more fragile personnel. :)

Wendell: do not disparage our greatest achievement
And that achievement is what, surviving past the age of 45? Well, that reflects the opinion of my former cardiologist, at last until he sent in the angio-cam and realized I don't have the kind of arterial blockage that he most enjoys treating (the only good thing about recently losing my medical insurance is that he won't to see me anymore)... Excuse the rant... But I digress... Anyway we all have 2-5 years left until we reach the Robert Palmer/John Ritter/Drop Dead Suddenly age, so I wouldn't rate it an achievement yet.... But I digress... If you're talking about no loss of gravitas as the achievement, I challenge you to find a middle-aged MeFite who HAS lost gravitas, or more likely, gained any maturity in the four years of this site. By my own assessment, my greatest achievement on MeFi is simply the ability to continue posting while consuming less alcohol than Migs and wearing more clothing than q.
In fact, my last year of unemployment/illness/unemployability has given me way too much time to reflect over my personal list of "lifetime achievements", particularly my influence on the corporate culture of my last employer, which during my first three years was gratifyingly significent, but I had failed to recognize had been completely obliterated by my tenth anniversary at the company, two months prior to my layoff. Or my previous creative contributions, most of which were doomed from the start to the quick disappearance into the ozone that is the nature of live local radio... still, I was recently heartened to catch a rerun of Stephen Spielberg's first movie-for-TV, "Duel", on which my radio mentor (and later employer) was immortalized for five minutes on a car radio listened to by the protagonist... as well as finding the work of a couple radio co-workers included in the "365 Days" Found Audio project ("The Frozen Embryo Song" by 3 Guys from Hollywood). But I digress again... At least the Web has resources like The Wayback Machine, site-mirror-mongers like our own quonsar, and the high likelihood that the highly esteemed Matt will, even if he someday shuts down the 'Filter, keep the domain name from falling into evil hands and keep the archives accessible so that future generations can say: "Who was that asshat wendell?"
But I digress...
Did I mention Happy Birthday, Matt?
Are we taking up a collection to get him a birthday call from Doug Fieger of The Knack?

"There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about," wrote Libran Oscar Wilde, "and that is not being talked about." You won't have to worry about the latter problem in the next two weeks. The number of discussions about your character and behavior will probably exceed that of any other 14-day period in the past five years. Fortunately, the astrological indicators suggest that a relatively high percentage of the gossip flying around will be benevolent and even flattering. It will be a good time, therefore, for a marketing campaign or networking blitz." This is from Rob Brezny's

Scanning that birthday list quickly, I'm always struck by what sweet deals we get on DVDs up here in the great white north compared to you affable chaps down there. Whereas you pay $85 American for Six Feet Under, we pay $90 Canadian (which is still outrageous, but I digress as I wait, quite coincidentally, for mine in the mail), and we pay basically the same price for all DVDs.

We come altogether fresh and raw into the several stages of life, and often find ourselves without experience, despite our years.
The defects of the mind, like those of the face, grow worse with age.
Old age is a tyrant that forbids us upon pain of death all the pleasures of youth.
Nothing is more ridiculous in old people that were once good-looking, than to forget that they are not so still.
Old people love to give good advice to console themselves for no longer being able to set a bad example.
As we grow older, we increase in folly-and in wisdom.
Neither the sun nor death can be looked at with a steady eye.
Few people know how to be old.
Francois, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680)
Happy Birthday.
