1. There will be no debate over the location or the date.

2. Darwin's will be the initial meeting place. We can then walk the two blocks into Harvard Square for food and drink.

In the alternative we can wait a week or two until this guy comes to town.

This is bad.
posted by anathema at 4:15 PM on November 4, 2003

the solution, obviously, is TWO orgies.
posted by quonsar at 4:16 PM on November 4, 2003

You people need to be coordinating your damn trips!
posted by anathema at 4:17 PM on November 4, 2003

In the other alternative, we can begin on the 22nd and the natives can continue the orgyparty until the following weekend.
posted by mr_crash_davis at 4:17 PM on November 4, 2003

For those *cough*quonsar*cough* who cannot make it on the 22nd, we will hold a decidedly C-List MeFi gathering the first or second week of December. *shivers*

Can somebody tell a clueless Mainer how to get to Darwin's, and where she might put her car?
posted by JanetLand at 4:37 PM on November 4, 2003

Darwin's is just a few blocks from the center of Harvard Square. There are pay lots in Harvard Square but I usually find a free spot (after 5 p.m.) on Mt. Auburn St., just passed Darwin's. Or do you mean from Maine?
posted by anathema at 4:40 PM on November 4, 2003

quonsar lives beside jimi hendrixs son , you cant get much cooler than that.

damit, i get the cargo hatch...

the orgy must have an Imperial flare.

i have Chinos and one nice purple silk neck scarf?

I am sooo tempted to go. But only if we wait for Quonsy.

I'm just here to stop any Outlander from suggesting parking in Harvard Yard.
posted by yerfatma at 6:41 PM on November 4, 2003

it's just that i wanted to meet crash so badly myself. the guy slays me night after night. i fall asleep giggling about things he said. whappa whappa

and i'm going to miss him by a week.
*shakes fist at sky, pouts*

i probably can't get out there that early, but the footloose and fancy-free circumstances i currently find myself in *will* allow me to extend my roaming in the area at will, so don't diddle this date on my account.

Can't y'all come to Noo Yawk instead of Beantown? I mean, it's a real city and all...

When I was living in New Haven and trying to decide whether to move to New York or Boston, a wise man said to me: "Boston isn't a smaller New York, it's a bigger New Haven." My choice was made.

Oh, I'm so there. Don't you worry, ana OR crash. Even if I have to drag my wife behind me by the hair, I'm there.

Note: I'm not really a Neanderthal husband, but I sometimes play one for comic effect.

All this meeting....you'd think there was an application for this kind of thing....I'll be in New York City on 22/11 thru 26/11...anyone fancy a beer?

I'm still smarting at having to miss out on Vegas due to this business trip coming up...so any opportunity to meet some fellow Mefites...
posted by mattr at 3:24 AM on November 5, 2003

I s'pose I should mention my N-trip (LA-SF-FL-NYC) next spring. I know the NYC crew can organise a meet on a dime but the rest of yous will need notice.

Not going to Boston tho'. Everybody says its just like Dawson's Creek & should be avoided. (Ducks behind languagehat behind Vidiot)

JanetLand, I'm thinking of taking the train, but we'd have to be back at North Station by 11:15 to get home, which would mean leaving Cambridge around 10:45... can one of you nice Boston types tell us clueless Mainers which T-station is closest to Darwin's? (I'm presuming Red Line - Harvard).

Also, if you look at the sidebar, Matt seems to think the Boston Meet-up is this weekend. Somebody might want to email him about that.

Here's some info about Darwin's on the web epinions; Boston Phoenix; The Tech (MIT); The Phoenix again

clavdivs, if quonsar's driving, he'll probably come right near Flint on his way from Grand Rapids. I'm sure you can hitch a ride. If you do, make sure you tape record the drive. I'd pay to hear that.

Darwin's! That's where I have lunch almost every weekday! If you're up for a good samm'ich, try the Story, a prosciutto mozzarella sensation.

Now that all the New Yorkers have voted themselves off the island, I'll be sure to come.
posted by kahboom at 7:46 AM on November 5, 2003

Just a note: Darwin's is now twice as large as when any of those reviews were written. The extra space is used for the coffee bar and extra seating. It's a nice place to start the evening.
posted by anathema at 7:56 AM on November 5, 2003

It's not very good timing for me, but this is not to be missed. Perhaps we could carpool down from Portland, Anastaviav and JanetLand? With 3 people, driving is quite cost-effective, and we wouldn't have to worry about leaving in time to get the train.
posted by theora55 at 8:21 AM on November 5, 2003

Hmmm. Three chicks from Maine, carpooling, to meet the famous men of Metafilter.

Sounds like a good time. Or a weird time.

If we all go, its possible we'll have more women at this meetup than at Oxford and Vegas combined....
posted by anastasiav at 8:30 AM on November 5, 2003

Wait... you're real people? I thought this was just a big Eliza proof-of-concept.

Darwin's is so close to where I live/work/exist. I almost feel weird not going, though the thought of meeting my fellow MeFites is staggeringly nerveracking. It feels like a blind date with a small town.

Perhaps I need a MeFiMeetup buddy. Does anyone want to be my MeFiMeetup buddy?

especially if you ask quonsar and clavdivs to come in drag, a "Some Like It Hot" moment if there ever was one

if one of you guys manages to convince Miguel to show up I guess he'll book a suite at the Charles (just a couple blocks from Darwin's) and everybody'll just crash there. and maybe catch the Rembradt exhibit at the MFA the following morning
posted by matteo at 9:04 AM on November 5, 2003

C'mon Migsy - book a plane ticket. I'll give you a kiss. :-) I'm dreaming of seeing Rembradt with you....

Unfortunately you jest, anastasiav - for you have no idea how far I would travel for a kiss from you. Boston is too near. To see you and Rembrandt through your eyes...aaahh... :)
posted by MiguelCardoso at 9:26 AM on November 5, 2003

OK, but are you booking the damn suite or not?
posted by matteo at 9:45 AM on November 5, 2003

Miguel, I don't jest. I will gladly give you a kiss if you come to Boston to get it, you silly poet you. ...

...although the drugs all over your blog are giving me some pause. You need to teach me to read Portuguese...

posted by anastasiav at 9:47 AM on November 5, 2003

Just so as long as you realize it takes a long, long time, anastasiav, and may involve three or four decades in my country, to get the accent just right.

(to anyone who would suggest "Get a room you two" - hah! A room has been booked hours ago!
;)

Yes, Miguel, but in what city?
posted by anastasiav at 10:10 AM on November 5, 2003

At The Benson of course! Here's a nice prospect of the first Portuguese lesson. :)
posted by MiguelCardoso at 10:38 AM on November 5, 2003

Or, of course, if you don't feel like *cough* travelling to Oregon, there's always the Portland Harbor Hotel...
posted by MiguelCardoso at 10:48 AM on November 5, 2003

My proposal for a boston meetup crapped the bed with dates and locales. This works a lot better! Barring any obligations that I forgot about, I'll be there.

Mainers, consider taking a bus instead of a train. It's faster (one hour, 55 minutes), more frequent and cheaper and you can park at the Concord Trailways bus terminal in Portland. And here's the big plus-- South Station Bus Terminal is on the Red Line, too, so it's a straight shot to Harvard. The only drawback is it's more cramped and you might have to sit near a runaway or something. But they show a movie.
posted by Mayor Curley at 10:49 AM on November 5, 2003

For anyone who gives a shit. I hereby vow to be there, for I have missed too many chances to meet anathema and yhbc, and a monkey foursome is just too good a chance to pass up.

(matteo: can't you somehow swing a visit that weekend?)

Mainers, you could also drive to Red Line-Alewife station, park in the garage ($4.50) and leave whenever you wanted to without worrying about missing a bus or train. Rt. 95/128 S --> Rt. 2 E and take the Alewife exit . ~2.5 hr. drive.

I'm definitely going if Mainers will be there! (Born in Maine, living away these 10 yrs.)
posted by initapplette at 8:04 AM on November 6, 2003

The Mainers are currently debating their car/train/bus options. Thanks for all the input!

It really cool that you're all making the trip, as you're not really de-programmers sent by Baldacci to take the ex-pats home:
