7. and rhyming posts. Yes. We need more rhyming posts.
Much of the criticism of VeTiGo was because his arguments were full of holes,
but instead of addressing that directly, he claimed unfair attacks.
MeFi'ites know that even the best posts bring out trolls,
and we learn the best way is to ignore them, go on with the talk, and relax.
The fact that this is web conversation puts us at an advantage:
Unlike in person, we can easily ignore comments invalid or annoying.
So if you're seeking a debate rather than a fight, you can easily manage.
(And the left-right complaint is as worthless as what the trolls are deploying--
You can't claim a bias exists on this site
because our words aren't censored--wrong, left, or right.
Claim what you want about the leanings of this population,
you can still make your point with rational presentation.)
But if you would rather leave MetaFilter in some dramatic, public pout,
know that martyrdom's overrated, and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

The sorts of posts that I find really interesting are extremely complicated concepts that take me a little bit of re-reading to understand. Of course, more often than not, I don't comment on those, and would much rather read the discourse from people who actually have a clue, or at least seem like they do.

What I think is cool
are those who don't drool
and spit with intemperate bile,
or rant, roar, and rave
as though their ego to save—
these things I find especially vile.
The things that are new—
the thoughts and ideas, too—
are what I particularly like,
the grudges & vendettas,
the "you're worse" and "I'm betta"s,
these things from the site I would strike.
Give me the smart use of words,
not the name-calling turds,
and you'll never hear me complain;
those who don't assume the worst
are those I'd put first,
and those who take time to explain.
The links that astound and excite
each day and most every night—
these are the core of the 'Filter;
if we focus on those
I think each of us knows
that would keep us from getting off-kilter.

I completely agree
with wise rushmc,
and I hope that his view catches on.
If people start quelling
the fighting and yelling,
the 'Filter could have a new dawn.
Let everyone strive
to keep fairness alive
and be thoughtful and clever and witty—
and let quonsar get well
from his tiamat hell,
in which everything makes him feel pretty.

You know what I'm tired of arguing with people who's minds I'm not gonna change and who don't like or respect me anyway. It just ends up making me feel bad and ruining the site for people I do enjoy.
So, Matt. sorry for every time I've acted like an asshole here and screwed up this truly great thing you've created.
And to people I've pissed off needlessly. Sorry to you, too.

I like well-presented argument, even if it doesn't change my mind. If I can understand the rational thought behind an opposing viewpoint, it helps bring my own views back to the moderate centre. (I don't think extremes are healthy in most cases.)
I like humour. I especially like unexpected humour. The spit-coffee-on-the-monitor humour.
I like the newsfilterish aspect of MetaFilter, as long as it provides new information or a unique view. And as long as it doesn't swamp the front page.
I really like a lot of the compassion and passion shown on MetaFilter. We've got people who are very empathetic to other's situations. We've also got people who are dedicated to their causes. That's better than homogenity.
Most of all, I really, really like the new GPS coordinates info on the user pages. If only that were true.
Sorry, I just had to get a pony in.

The good thing of metafilter is that certain people I saw here had very good blogs and I like to read them.
And I feel like if I'm ever in Portugal I would try to look M.E. Cardoso up in the phonebook and see if he would hang out, and if he didn't want to or was busy that would be cool anyway because there's probably tons to do in Portugal and besides that's not the only reason I went there.

For the record, I think Miguel is cool, even though I threw a "hot air bag" cheap shot at him in the "Hawking's Balloon Basket" thread. But if I'd made the joke about somebody here I really consider a "hot air bag", then I'd probably get the Wrath of God thrown down upon me (or, in a least one case, the Wrath of God-Doesn't-Exist).

and to not have some fun here would be a crime.

Once you try to define 'cool' it ceases to be.
Do not look for The Cool as it is a fickle thing, always in your peripheral, never in focus.
The Cool does not exist as you and I do. Nay, The Cool is a neo-platonic ideal, one that while is serves a purpose as an example or a frame of reference, The Cool is not, in the strictest sense, real.
However, if a gun were placed to my head by a rather twitchy, caffienated PETAphile, then I would be forced take the damn bullet. The Cool must remain unspoken.

I spent twenty seconds trying to properly transcribe the next, entirely non-verbal, part of that song, as I often verbalize it when making love to a beautiful lady, but putting it down into words proved too difficult. Hopefully that image has scarred you, though, and carrying on with your meagre and wayward existence proves difficult.
If anything, this place needs more horrifying personal details.

srboisvert, thank you for doing something to turn the negative tide and make us all think about what we love about this site. I also quite enjoyed the 'wrong' link - quonsar is exactly one of the things I love about MeFi - everytime I decide I really like or dislike him, he changes my mind.
I think MetaFilter is one of the coolest things on the web. I enjoy the links and the personalities and even the poo-flinging on occasion. It is always entertaining, frequently enlightening and sometimes frustrating. And it's exactly this mix that keeps us coming back. Or me, at least.
Mid, I hadn't seen that before and it really, really made me laugh. You should post the 'original' too so people can put it in proper context...

I think about love
Darlin, gonna live without you
And your love
If I had those golden dreams of my yesterday
I would wrap you
In the heavens
And feel it dying dying dying all the way
well i feel like makin
Feel like makin love
Feel like makin love
Feel like makin love
I feel like makin love to you
Baby, if I think about you
I think about love and
Darlin, if I had to live without you
I live without love
And if I had the sun and moon
and they were shinin
I would give you both night and day
Love satisfying
well I Feel like makin
Feel like makin love
Feel like makin love
Feel like makin love
I feel like makin love to you
And if I had those golden dreams of my yesterday
I would wrap you
In the heavens
Feel it dying dying dying all the way
Feel like makin
Feel like makin love
Feel like makin love
Feel like makin love
I feel like makin love to you

Tomorrow (Korea time) is my Third Metafilter Birthday, and that's pretty fucking cool (or sad, depending on how you look at it). Christ on a moped, I musta written a novel or two's worth of bibblebibble here in the last 3 years..

I like that, most of the time, by the time I get around to posting or replying to something, someone else has already perfectly expressed my thoughts, only ten times better than I ever could have.
And I'm not even going to check to see if someone did it in this thread.

Happy Bird-day to you!
Now, everybody sing!!!
When you find yourself in danger
When you're threatened by a stranger
When it looks like you might take a lickin'
(Buck buck buck buck)
There is one thing you should learn
When there is no one else to turn to
Call for stavrosthewonderchicken!
Fred, if you're afraid you'll have to overlook it!
Besides you knew the job was dang'rous when you took it.
He will drink his supersauce
And throw the bad guys for a loss
And he will bring them in alive and kickin'
(Buck buck buck buck)
There is one thing you should learn
When there is no one else to turn to
Call for stavrosthewonderchicken!
(Buck buck buck buck)
Call for stavrosthewonderchicken!
(Buck buck!!)

That does it! I posted my wonderchicken birthday greeting in the wrong thread and, as penance, I'm diving to my death for my sin. :)
