Getting Metafilter Inolved In Issues March 16, 2001 3:57 PM   Subscribe

I really want MetaFilter to do issues. The only one so far was A Day Without Weblogs, which seemed to be a hit with the kids. Other issues don’t have to be quite so emotionally charged. We could do No Words like the fabulous Mod7 suckas. I wait for their updates like a dog in heat. Or, art rock and associated labels.

Or, you know, anything.

This is a good idea to me because a lot of old skool posters just aren’t here anymore. Most of the quality posters are gone or getting frustrated, and the site is in a news/politics rut.

Only steadfast stewardship saves publications from mediocrity. When the users and readers become the stewards, the responsibility isn’t dispersed, it remains whole and strong in each one. I’m just doing my little bit in staying the course.

No offense, but I don't. The DWW one was a special case and a complete surprise to me that it worked. There's never been a topic centered slant to this site and I don't want to start suddenly forcing everyone to confine themselves on the days I see fit to introduce a topic.

It’s worked for magazines and newspapers for a couple hundred years.

A little more direction is warranted for a site suffocated by its users. Simply filtering comments and kicking the occasional rowdy doesn’t seem like a valid long-term plan.

I hope whatever you decide works out for the best.

It worked for major online services for a couple hundred dog-years...

Unless of course you want a self-policing community that figures out what it wants to talk about and talks about that, with no (or rather, few) constraints on topicality. :-)

"Topical MeFi" would bore me quickly.

"Tropical MeFi" sounds like a nice fruity drink for a hot day.

It maybe worked for magazines and newspapers for a couple hundred years, but, see, I hate most magazines and newspapers. I for one do not want to see this site turn into "Time." And I'm still not sold on the idea that MeFi is being "suffocated" by its users. More often than not, I'm seeing the usual posters, the occasional newbie (who just as often vanishes after a few days--remember "The_One"?), and even less often, a gruesome troll who must be bounced by Matt. For me, this place is just still wonderful, growing pains and all.

I disagree with the capt's assessment of the quality or topicality of Mefi discussion. I think the news/politics links are great. There's also a lot of other topics. If the captain is worried about a lack of a certain topic, why doesn't he dig some interesting links up? Personally, I prefer the market system for finding direction in a community. I find MeFi to be particularly interesting day-in and day-out.

Skot, I hate Time, too. You ever read Speak? Or The Baffler? Or XLR8R? Or Harper’s? Or Mute? Or Blue? Or Azure? Or Clamor? Or New Art Examiner? I reccomend them all, but you'll have to buy Speak back issues as they recently died.

I don’t know. You get a guy like Steven getting frustrated, Mars posting once a week, Rcade limiting himself to a few lines, Johnb gone, Sylloge gone, Cam gone, Zeldman good as gone and you start to wonder. I’m afraid I’m with them.

Punishing users on a user-run site by filtering or rating them seems like a strange solution. Certainly the least work in the long-run, and that is certainly a very important measure in this problem.

Like I said, I hope whatever changes are in the future work out for the best.

Enjoy!
