Netherlands meetup 2004 January 21, 2004 1:04 PM   Subscribe

Anyone interested in a MeFi gathering in the Netherlands ? It seems that there are at least two dozen Dutchies around. Dus laat wat van je horen, zou ik zeggen!

Actually, I'm going to be there from Feb. 5th-10th--can I come too? : >

I heart the Netherlands. I was there last year and will probably be going over again this year. (My band is hoping to do another late spring tour in the Netherlands this year.)

So, if I make it over, we could meet up at a rock show! Melkweg anyone?

Count me in. Tel mij erin!

amberglow: Sure, but you have to either wear clogs or carry a bunch of tulips. This is non-negotiable. oranjegloei: Natuurlijk, maar je moet of klompen dragen of een bos tulpen ronddragen. Dit is niet open voor onderhandeling.

Oh, and I'm calling Amsterdam as a location, so you sly delfties don't try and put it somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Oh, en ik stel nu vast Amsterdam voor de locatie, zodat jullie geniepige delftenaren het niet midden in het niks kunnen plannen.

fvw (maybe i'll wear a little red-light ensemble, or some Sissy Boy) is that last part "not open for negotiation"? and who you calling "a julie geniepige"? ; >

and ginz: you in? is groningen far from amsterdam?

amberglow = oranjegloei. What a cool language.
posted by fletchmuy at 6:10 PM on January 21, 2004

a cool language (mushy-sounding tho), and a very cool country : >
posted by amberglow at 8:00 PM on January 21, 2004

Sounds cool, since I'm originally from the Netherlands and are there every once in a while I'll drop by if I'm in the neighborhood.

(BTW, I vote Utrecht)

Ik post niet vaak, maar ik zou wel naar een bijeenkomst in Amsterdam komen.

(I don't post often, but I'd attend a meet in Amsterdam.)

Do i need a passport from the UK?
posted by dash_slot- at 11:54 AM on January 22, 2004

Good idea. I second Amsterdam. Wat een kek idee. De hoofdstad lijkt mij goed, ook fijn voor invliegende Europeanen.

As the UK is not in Schengen, I'd say you need a passport.

Okay, let's try some dates. How is everybody for Saturday, February 7th?

Volmaakt with me! Waar? ; >

(and give me the nearest big street or canal if it's on a tiny street, or not within the 3 big canal rings)

anywhere fun in the pijp (like Albert Cuyp straat and around there?)
posted by amberglow at 1:28 PM on January 22, 2004

I don't know anything in the pijp, but if anyone else has a suggestion, fine. Otherwise, how about that Irish pub on the rembrandtplein? I can never remember the name, it's not the old bell but the other one. Any help anyone?
posted by fvw at 3:58 PM on January 22, 2004

It's the st. James Gate. But I'm not picky about other locations. As long as it's not the melkweg.
posted by fvw at 4:05 PM on January 22, 2004

how about a brown bar? (but not one with singing) or a lounge-y place? (i'll go anywhere, but i usually avoid irish bars all over the world (loud and full of tourists)--it's like going to mcdonald's or hard rock)
posted by amberglow at 4:32 PM on January 22, 2004

Perhaps, but let's face it. We're going to be a loud bunch of tourists, so we might as well blend in. Still, if you can find a bruin cafe doesn't mind a bunch of rowdy people who don't know eachother apart from via an odd website, more power to you.
posted by fvw at 6:18 PM on January 22, 2004

I can, but not til i'm there, so you guys pick away--anywhere's good : >
posted by amberglow at 7:03 PM on January 22, 2004

I should be able to make it.

I'll keep track of things here here. Drop me a line if you want to join!

Great, perhaps we could get a sidebar mention? Matt, are you reading this or should we beg-by-mail?

Offtopic but interesting: I just noticed my sidebar on MeFi was collapsed. An inadvertent click or an bug? (You decide! Call our hotline now and place your vote!)
posted by fvw at 1:50 AM on January 23, 2004

I've just mailed Matt about the side-bar thingy.
posted by swordfishtrombones at 3:16 AM on January 23, 2004

hello ! i'll go and have a look and see if i can make it !
posted by sgt.serenity at 3:29 AM on January 23, 2004

Sorry amber, I will be preparing for a work conference (aka massive networking piss-up) in London around that time. No rest for the wicked...
posted by romakimmy at 7:29 AM on January 23, 2004

aw, roma...i'll have to get myself to Italy soon then (i'm overdue, but it's harder to get really cheap airfare there)

and come if you can, sgt and dash (and all other europeans)! It'll be fun, and Amsterdam is so central.
posted by amberglow at 8:06 AM on January 23, 2004

what is your itinerary , oh amber one ?
posted by sgt.serenity at 10:20 AM on January 23, 2004

I arrive the morning of the 5th, and leave the morning of the 11th--museums, barhopping, shopping maybe, the meetup, rotterdam for a day, and maybe the hague or some other place or kroller-muller museum (which I love--it's in this park and you take a bike thru the park to get to it)...you wanna come for the day, sgt? We'll go bopping around town? : >
posted by amberglow at 10:37 AM on January 23, 2004

so, are we decided on that irish place?
posted by amberglow at 9:59 AM on January 24, 2004

What, ireland you mean? Nah, let's stick to amsterdam.

But it would appear everybody lost interst as soon as it scrolled off the front page...
posted by fvw at 12:41 AM on January 25, 2004

I don't think they did....what time? 8? 9? 7?

Wanna send emails to the people who said they'll come? (i can, if you want)

Also, is matt going to put it on the sidebar?
posted by amberglow at 9:32 AM on January 25, 2004

I've update my flashy webpage, including the 'maybes'. No response from Matt about the side-bar.

Maybe repost it, now we picked a date and time ?
posted by swordfishtrombones at 12:08 AM on January 26, 2004

good idea, apart from the fact that we haven't picked a time yet.

8 sounds fine, though seeing as some people might need to get back home with public transportation, maybe 7 is better.
posted by fvw at 1:43 AM on January 26, 2004

Oh, it appears we do have a time. Your dictatorship is much appreciated, 7 it is. Knock yourself out and put us back on top of the front page I say.
posted by fvw at 1:45 AM on January 26, 2004

As I'll be driving from Belgium, I plan to make a day of it, hopefully arriving around noon. If anyone wants, we can do a little pre-meetup and hit some of the sights (sights that you could take the vicar too I mean) before we meet the rest of the reprobates.

Drop me an email if this sounds like your cup of chai.
posted by Dagobert at 4:23 AM on January 26, 2004

sure Dagobert--i'm also going to do early dinner before if anyone wants to meet for that : >
