Server outages February 4, 2004 10:23 PM   Subscribe

MetaFilter, MetaTalk, and Ask Metafilter might be sporadic over the next day or so, as the server hosting the DNS has died for now. Hopefully that server will be back tomorrow morning, but if not, you could hack your hosts file to point the three domains at 209.10.108.201.

If you see the sites unreachable by morning, that's why.

clav: it is currently.

#mefi's temporary home is at us.undernet.org, port 6667.

As of about 9am PST, regular old turlyming #mefi is back up and running.

Thank God, for a few minutes there I thought I was going to have to be productive today!

Does the HOSTS file work with Mozilla?
I thought it was just IE.

Does the HOSTS file work with Mozilla?

A hosts file is done on the OS level, so it will work with any and all internet applications on your system. You're basically telling windows or mac internal networking that metafilter.com will always be at that IP, so any application directed at the address will use the local hosts file instead of looking out onto the internet.
