It's been almost a year since the Metafilter $30 Giveaway. I'm going to be doing it again...

That damn spork has been on my things to buy list for almost a year now too.

I have come back to this thread many time just to look for the URL that you purchased for the winner. What ever came of that?

... although this time, at the suggestion of our very own Avogadro, I'm going to offer a prize that's potentially over $30.

Here's a PayPal link; I'll start off by chipping in thirty bucks. All funds donated through this link will be given away in a contest like last year's, again judged on "coolness."

Any questions? Here'd be the place to post 'em.

Ah. As for last year's winning URL, it's www.worth30bucks.com, although it's been "coming soon" for eleven months now.

I did not mean to jump in, in front of you, I did not notice that you had just posted the topic seconds before I arrived.

I thought this was a great idea last year, and have not changed my mind.

The Metafilter $30 Giveaway is now... the Metafilter $40 Giveway. Thanks to the donor. I'll continue to post the size of the fund pool on this thread.

I'll be launching the contest on May 15th, so the funds pool will remain open to donations at least until then.

Geez, I've been lurking here for almost a year? The $30 Giveaway thread was one of the first things I read on Metafilter, and I was completely blown away. I ended up buying a cool t-shirt and reading metafilter daily. What a deal!

Jeremy, if you control the worth30bucks domain, how about we point it at a special metafilter page? We could announce it one day on metafilter proper, then do public submissions in replies to its own thread on its own page.

Or you could just put explanations up on the worth30bucks site, and point at the metafilter thread for this year's event.

Ah, alas, I don't own the site— I transferred it immediately over to its rightful winner, Costas. I guess we could e-mail him and see if he'd be interested in participating in one of the fashions you mention (putting it on the "to do" list).

I guess I'm a little disappointed about the, uh, complete lack of turnout this year. Nearly all the stuff posted last year was incredibly cool, and I guess I was looking forward to more of the same. C'mon people, I want to see neat stuff!

Ah well. Here's my entry anyway: a giant weather balloon (26+ foot diameter! Whee!).

Lirp, I think that jbushnell was planning on making a MeFi post for the contest on May15th. This is just the donation to the $30 contest thread cough, cough.

Hey, boy was I not paying attention. Um... Well, don't mind me, I'll just get out of everyone's way.

I received another donation, so we're looking at a $50 pool this year. And I'll be out of town on the 15th, so look for the post on the 16th.

Hey there Jeremy, how was the trip?
posted by Avogadro at 10:51 AM on May 16, 2001

Great trip, aside from flight delays (ah, Chicago) and mild illness.

The Giveaway is live as of a few minutes ago.

Very nice, thanks man (sorry about the illness, it seems to be going around).

By the bye, be prepared for a 350 comment thread...
