Shock sites: OK for posting? April 3, 2004 8:18 AM   Subscribe

Okay, so I found a collection of NSFW sites....like, some "classics" of the "shock site" genre. I know there have been NSFW posts in the past, but those were just for nudity. I don't think there's been any pornography, nor do I think there's been anything like this posted either.

I think a lot of people (like myself) have never heard of many of these sites, and might be interested to know what some of them are (i.e. tubgirl...never heard of her until that MeTa post a few weeks back). It's....fascinating like a train wreck.

And the good part is that the site I want to link to is safe for work itself. It just lists a bunch of awful sites to go to, and because of that, I'm a little leery of posting. Thoughts?

Doesn't seem worthwhile or within the spirit of the site. The shock sites are readily available to anyone with the inclination. Word is out-- people can email you for the link.

don't post it here. Post it to fark. thanks.

If you're talking about the "Stile Project," I've just learned of this fascinating, yet understated web-project myself!

Yeah... I don't know if we need any more grist for that particular mill. I used to just click merrily away at everything on MeFi, but now I always check user names first, and mouseover on links to get a clue. Even so, a lot of times I wait until more comments are added before "daring" to click a link from a user I'm not so sure about. I weep for my lost innocence.

i'll second mathowie's vote. i've never really thought of shock sites as "the best of the web".

Fark? They'd kick you off fark for that too.

I'll third matt's vote. [Although I think that it is less likely a "vote" than a "directive."]

well, what if they were really creative, or really new and different from everything else on the web? I think as long as they were very clearly labelled as NSFW (or virgin eyes), it'd be ok.

Don't get me wrong, taumeson; I didn't think you were going to link it without a warning. What I meant is that I wasn't crazy about people finding even more shock sites to sneak into comment links, which has been done here several times.

We were still guessing, right?

hama, milovoo: He already said what he'd been thinking of posting, and it's already been linked right here in this thread. Doesn't anybody read threads anymore?

What are "threads"?

Glad you pointed that out, missed it the first time.

and, for the record, i was gonna post the wiki that TFYLM posted.

Oh, oops, I did read the thread, just not carefully enough. I think I read it as wanting to post an interesting page from an unsafe site. I thought that TFYLM's link was background on the subject of unsafe sites. Perhaps I've just been reading too much AskMe lately.

i dont know, seems to me that if you spend some time wandering around online you come upon these sites in one way or another. i can do without them being posted here.
posted by bob sarabia at 3:29 PM on April 3, 2004

Sure, but it's like spam. I'm not interested in spam, but an article talking about the history and trends of spam, I may read.

meta, ya know.

if someone wants to post a background on these different sites and their content, that would be pretty interesting. but just a list, no thanks. i can go to the sick shit forum for that (a link to a link to different links to NSFW stuff)
posted by bob sarabia at 4:03 PM on April 3, 2004

bob: actually, the Wiki link in question does have a lot of "background on these different sites and their content." Check it out.

i think you guys are starting to see why i wanted to post it, and also why i was a bit hesitant :)

personally, i feel that if people don't know what it is they're looking for, they aren't going to find the "classic" shock sites, which i why i thought this could have been an interesting post.

what's the "best of the web" without the "worst"?

The best of the web.

what's the "best of the web" without the "worst"?

Well, there is an actual Worst of the Web, which is pretty fantastically funnily bad, but not what is described below.

What I think you mean by "worst" is "dangerously, freakishly, criminally depraved, jailable-in-some-countries, toss-your-cookies, seizure-inducing, helpless, thrashing, swan-dive-into-toilet-bowl putrid".

Not quite the same thing.

The wiki page is safe, I've used it on a number of occasions to explain goatse et.al. to the uninitiated. That said, I could swear I got it from here, so it may well have been a double anyway. I'm fairly sure we've discussed shock sites before.

i was really just referring to the posting of something like that here, like it should only be posted if there was background, not just a list...that wiki is pretty cool too. made me realize that i should have taken the name "bob goatse", damnit

oh yeah, also: if no one's seen it, i like man.cx myself. (completely SFW)

The goatse guy (webmaster not the actual pictured guy -- I hope) lives in my neighborhood... err... the townhouses that my neighborhood leads into. Right next to a park I used to play in as a young lad. I drove by his house once and my friends and I were going to go in and get an autograph or at least meet the man behind the myth. But then we all chickened out. On a side note, when driving to my house at night it appears that his townhouse always has a bunch of cars and youngish people going in and out with alcohol. So maybe he's really cool and I haven't been invited to any of his parties.

Good on you for asking. But I know someone posted that wiki in a MeFi thread the other day. I think it would've been useful if it weren't a double post. [Okay, technically it never got its own FPP, but still.]
