Obits: if you don't care, stay out June 29, 2001 6:43 PM   Subscribe

Raining on other people's parades. I've seen this before, eulogizing, and I don't know if it's been discussed here, but people have a bad habit of being contrary and blase simply for the sake of it.

So in this thread, which admittedly I am very upset about, seeing as how I used "font size=7" to proclaim my sorrow, why are people coming in to a thread that is about mourning of a sort and talking about how much they don't care? You didn't read pamie.com? Wonderful! Why the hell are you talking about it, then? You didn't like it? Super! Does that mean your opinions are appropriate?

Are people so in love with the "sound of their own voice" that they just have to blab, regardless of the thread? I'd like to know, really.

Welcome to Metafilter, where people have opinions. Where threads risk morphing with every ost. And where the posters are assumed to be able to handle those facts. If you have a thread to make that is so utterly precious to you that you cannot accept either or both of those two things happening, then you need to find somewhere else to post your thread than the front page of MeFi.

And yes, it has been discussed here before, into the ground, at least once, maybe twice. The general consensus at the end was, you have no right to expect or demand your thread go in a particular direction, and you need to accept that fact.

I think you're overreacting, solistrato.

First off, the thread just said "Pamie packs it in." It wasn't there specifically for mourning. And I didn't see anyone in there saying that they didn't care; a few people said that they hadn't read it, and they were responding to other points raised in the thread.

I don't think you can expect everyone to interpret a thread's meaning the same way you do and then get upset when they don't.

Well, you know, what if I came along and posted that JimboZeebob.com (i.e. a site you've never heard of) is shutting down? What if every time any website shut down someone posted a thread about it? I think it's legitimate to go say "who cares?" or to question the value of taking up Mefispace to have a pity party about some website. It's not like someone just posted "*yawn*" or something. :)

You didn't like it? Super! Does that mean your opinions are appropriate?

Of course! Everyone's opinions are appropriate! If everyone's supposed to just post about how much they all agree with each other, then what's the point of posting it on Mefi?

But, still, it SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS.

I'm going to break things now. Damnit.

I must ask, where is the real discussion here?

Maybe the 7 point font is what makes people want to rain the parade.

Who? The thread's packed to the gills with people who liked the site, aside from a single person who said he had never heard of it.

Don't mind me, just ensuring readability.

Oh Christ. Did I do that? I'm sorry. (It doesn't show up on my browser, but I bet it looks awful.)
