Instant weblog software! July 6, 2001 8:36 AM   Subscribe

I was just thinking (but only briefly): What if you took a simple guestbook script, tweaked it so new entries went on top, then password protected it. Oila! Instant weblog software! Granted, you would have to hand code the templates and such, but it seems like it might work.

Ironically, I've been thinking for some time about tweaking a weblog script I wrote into a guestbook. They really do both do essentially the same thing: add entries to a web page in a standard format.

A sane archiving scheme is tough to come by this way, though, and the resulting site might not be readily indexable by a search engine.

How fast would it be when you reached 500 entries? Would it maintain an archive for you off-page?

Good points. It seems like there are a few emerging versions of MeFi, but the real trick will be to find something reasonably polished with full web administration that isn't a nightmare to install and use.
