Behold a new form of self-linking: Giving your own weblog a "via" credit when posting a link here. (Via Waxpancake)
Oddly enough, the webgods seem to have punished him already . . . the site is down, as far as I can tell. Beware the webgods' wrath.

I'm not sure why people get so snippy about self-linking. What's the big deal?
What if I did something really great and newsworthy on my own site, and I wanted people to see it?
Obviously, I can see it getting out of control ("check it out, MeFi! I got a new cat!") but dismissing the entire concept as "arrogant" and "masturbatory" seems overly political.
For example, when I made National Commando Day: A Day Without Underwear (December 17th) (site currently offline), I wanted very badly to promote it here. It was something the MeFi crowd would have liked. But instead I kept it quiet, and it got minimal exposure, because the cries of "self-link!" were imminent. In that instance, I feel that linking oneself would have been a reasonable thing to do.
But I can see how it'd be annoying too. Anyway, is there anyone who'd prefer an "absolutely no self-linking" policy here, and if so, how come?

I think the argument is something along the lines of "If you build it, they will come" -- if your site is really all that great, some other MeFi user might just link to it at some point (hey, it worked for me). I don't know if that's necessarily true, but I'd just hate to see ten zillion people posting links to their sites..
On a side note, now that I know about it, will National Commando day be making a return this year? :)

I see your point, succa, but a high percentage of MeFi users are making their own sites, and we all think our stuff is Metafilterable. The problem is, much of it isn't. Without the rule, everything goes to hell.
For those who haven't heard, Jerry Kindall has a weekly "MeFi Projects" mailing list, which we all can use to announce what we're working on.

Commando Day will indeed make its triumphant return come December. I hope.
I'll check out that mailing list, thanks.

Oh, I just pay my friends to link to my stuff on MeFi when I need hits.
Case of beer and some Krispy Kremes. I think it's worth it.

By the way, have any of you ever visited that great site utopian.net? Wow, it's awesome.
