No Blockquote? July 9, 2001 1:57 PM   Subscribe

when I use blockquote, it screws up the formatting for the rest of the page (margin way-left). what should I be using instead?

I'm reasonably certain that it just messes stuff up in the preview - it should make it through to the regular post just fine.
testing
This blockquote was broken as you described in the preview.

okay, this is a test.
I thought I went ahead and posted one once, and the whole thread went to hell. maybe that was something else.

I'm glad too! I'd wondered about that problem.

I made extensive use of blockquotes in this post. The preview was the preview from hell. But thankfully the post came out ok. I went back to see some of Stewart's posts to make sure if blockquotes would work. Then closed my eyes and said Hail Mary before I clicked on Post.

You still have to be careful with blockquotes (and DIV, and lists), because they're a block element, so they add extra space above and below. Since MeFi's input routine also adds space for a newline in the input, and since most people put in a blank line in their HTML you end up with posts full of air, unless you're careful *not* to start your blockquote (etc.) on a new line.

Example 1:
Here's a blockquote that starts immediately after the preceding text, on the same line. Here's some filler to make it format nicely. Here's some more filler, to make it format even more nicely
Thus endeth the blockquote.

Example 2:
Here's a blockquote in normal "good" HTML style, with a blank line separating it from the preceding and following text. Here's some filler to make it format nicely. Here's some more filler, to make it format even more nicely
Thus endeth the blockquote.

Rebecca, I'm sorry we ever empowered you to use BLOCKQUOTE. :)
