Register to view any links in FPP? Grrr June 7, 2004 7:38 AM   Subscribe

"Look on other sites before posting" is a classic argument against certain FPPs, yet here we have an FPP that requires a full registration at another discussion site to view any of the links. Anyone care to defend Keyser?

It doesn't require a full registration. You just have to click on the first link; the rest are hosted elsewhere.

I think this is a "technical difficulties" issue. Copy the link and paste it in your address bar (or just turn off sending of referer information in your browser). I found it an interesting link and a good post. Thanks Keyse!

I'm not registered there and I could view the thread and all the linked pictures. Some were fascinating, and I saved a few. I agree with the above, it was a very good post.

Ill defend myself, your honor.

Don't take this the wrong way, but this Metatalk post is kind of.... well, pointless. SA does not require registration to view certain portions of the forum, and my link was in that said area.

If you read any of the comments in the post you should have noticed I said more than once you have to "click-through" to see the pictures. I set up the post to be simple to access the forum and go straight to the pictures in question.

Anyways, Matt Haughey, can you remove the last link out of my post, if you have the time? Thank you.

Not that, y'know, this one actually does require registration.

Please see the new SomethingAwful thread entitled "Which one of you dumbshits posted my last AP thread to MetaFilter?" for some context. [from here you can just scroll down to see the forum, you might need to cut n paste the link to not have a MeFi referrer] Apparently a Mr. AK47 had been posting these photos into a "non-public" thread. Making them suddenly largely public on MeFi was a bandwidth suck. Steps were taken. Keyser is now Public Enemy #1 there, for at least the next 10-15 minutes. Hey Keyser, is that your house?

I'm suspicious of that Public Enemy #1 link in jessamyn's post. Copying and pasting gives me the image, but if I just click through, Mozilla warns me that the URL's redirection limit has been exceeded. It looks like they're trying to crash the system of anyone clicking through from MeFi.

In regards to that follow-up thread ("Which one of you dumbshits..."):

I generally sort of hate SomethingAwful but pushing that aside for a moment, isn't it a bit stupid to get upset when someone links to something you posted on the Internet? Unless there was some serious technical barrier between 'the non-privileged' and your ultra-secret-I'm-gonna-get-fired-for-posting-this information, it's fair game.

From what I've read, it's regarded as taboo to link to this guy's posts outside of the SomethingAwful community, but if you didn't sure as fuck put some kind of password, or whitelist, or something between the world and your information, then you may as well consider it available to everyone you ever met.

Sorry if that's a bit of a derail, but there's a nasty "fuck you for using technology in the way it was intended" vibe going on in that thread.

Geez, Keyser. You certainly have a way of making friends -- those boys on SA are getting ready to have themselves a good old fashioned lynching.

BTW, it was pretty cheesy to post a link from a private forum to the front page of Metafilter. Between bringing the wrath of SA down on Mefi and trying to sell your account on the SA forums it's looking like 'shitheal' may be an understatement. AK47 obviously bears some responsibility for posting what he shouldn't have, but there is a difference between sharing a link with some friends and posting it in public.

I don't get it. Aren't links to the SA forums spread all over all the time? What about that guy whose loony mother filled up their house with ebay crap? Or the P-P-P-Powerbook?
The only reason this is causing a stir is because this AK guy realizes he made a dumb fucking move posting unauthorized AP photos online. It's hardly Keyser's or MeFi's fault if he loses his job.

Ehhhhh. I dunno. I see your point, obviously, but there are communities of ettiquette out here, where norms prevail. Apparently, posting a public link with multiple large images to a highly-trafficked linkfilter is a bad-bad to whomever runs that forum. They have taken the technical steps to deal with it now. Adding an ettitquette slap doesn't make them stupid.

"I don't get it. Aren't links to the SA forums spread all over all the time?"

The difference is that there are community norms at both SA and Mefi that Keyser, as a member of both, should be aware of. People have been sanctioned here at Mefi for stirring up trouble with other sites (sites that will remain nameless, for obvious reasons). For anyone who has tried to view Metafilter in the last couple of hours the reason should be obvious.

Myself, I think it's more important that Keyser tried to sell his Mefi account on SA. Not that it really matters what I think, but I'd like to see anyone selling accounts suspended or banned. In essence it is selling someone elses property. We don't own these things, user #1 just lets us borrow them for a time.

scarabic: Yeah, I suppose I saw their attack on Metafilter first and not their condemnation of the individual who posted the link, which is in fact the opposite of how it happened. It is ridiculous to be upset with people who simply clicked on a link, but that's not really what happened here.

Oh, and, what mathowie said. Checking referers would have prevented all of this.
posted by mmcg at 2:27 PM on June 7, 2004

mr.marx gets it. That post was available for non-logged in people [I guess they were advertising their coool forums? Mistake.] so why should Keyser think it wasn't when it was? Seems like people host images on their own sites, rather than SA's forums, they might not all be wise to referer checks. They should be now.
Selling a MeFi account though? Baaaaaaaad. Very very bad.

First of all, the link in question was accesible to me anonymously. I can prove it because my account was banned earlier than the post time. Second of all, I had no intention of breaking the rules of either site by showing those pictures, and I hate the fact that other people had to pay for my fuck up. The server is getting DoSed, my fault. Pictures were taken of my house (which isnt my house, its my parents. So don't bring my family into this.) and blood has been shed. Everyones mad at me because I fucked up. I know this, now. I didn't know I was fucking up when I posted the FPP. Things are looking mighty shitty on both ends of the spectrum.

Fortunately, a very generous mefite paid the bandwith charge for this, which is more than what I ever expected. All over a post. This is ridiculous. How embarrassing. I apologized to the person that I affected and I still kept getting shit on, but thats SomethingAwful for you anyways. I don't really know how to react to this.... for lack of a better word, craziness. Sorry you are getting DoSed Matt.

And it was only a short few days ago when we were wondering where he had gone off too...

Keyser, you won't be banned. You breached some ettiquette on SA, but after I read the whole thread, I think they went too far, but you did ignore their rules purposely to get back at being banned.

Here are things I see wrong with this situation:

- the guy hosting the photos could and should put an .htaccess file in place that only limits views to those coming from forum.somethingawful.com. That would eliminate 99.99% of outside access to them.

- Keyser ignored the "please don't share this URL" message, because he was banned earlier for trying to sell his MeFi login. I'm not happy with people trying to sell their logins here, but I haven't done anything to stop it and probably won't. I believe people shouldn't do it, but I'm going to leave the decision of whether or not to do it up to others.

- the SA forums go nuts and photograph his house, then mock others for saying it was over the line. While no crime has been committed, that's definite harrassment, and I'm sure Keyser's parents would be angry if they heard the whole story. Even mocking, ironic mob justice can go too far, as some random kid named Peter Brown at OSU probably found out today.

I'll skip over the parts where bandwidth used by people seeing the photos from a public link is considered "stealing" when they are AP photos lifted from someone's work server. I'll also skip over the part where Keyser committed the worst sin in the world, but you can pay SA an extra $10 for a platninum forum account that gives you access to trading pirated movie torrents, porn, and ripped mp3s.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 4:20 PM on June 7, 2004

I wasn't.

Otherwise, what Matt said in the deletion comment thingo. I've been a lurker at SA as long as I've been a member here, I think, and I for one would prefer the two worlds remain separate.

On preview, holy crap, I didn't realize that the goons had gone into attack mode on Keyser. Still, what a doofus.

I'll also skip over the part where you pay SA an extra $10 for a platninum forum account that gives you access to trading pirated movie torrents, porn, and mp3s.

Sorry for the cognitive dissonance : too early in morning for me read good.

Jesus, Matt, try not to piss on a good thing, will ya?

Well, I guess it's because last year a friend pointed out that the SA forums were trading an obscure DVD that isn't available in my region of the world, and I found out I had to pay money twice to get access to a torrent of it.

Glass houses and all, but on the one hand they're accusing someone of stealing bandwidth and doing something that seems dishonest and on the other hand the community charges money and in exchange provides a forum for trading illegal stuff. I don't mind people trading torrents or music or whatever, and I'm fine if they limited access to those holding accounts, just don't charge people money for access to that kind of thing. I don't think that's a business anyone should be in and puts file traders quite a bit closer to actual bootleggers selling pirated movies.

Now, having said that, I have little doubt Keyser could kick my butt. I'm 40, pudgy, and seriously out of shape. Back in the day I might have been a badass. But no more. Does that mean I shouldn't say anything offensive? Does that mean I need to always consider whether I'm willing to get beat up for it before I click post?

I think not. Freedom of speech many times means freedom to be a jerk. And I am a jerk. I'm sure that surprises no one. Especially people who know me IRL. Right?

But like I said, fair's fair. If Keyser needs to defend his honor by bloodying my face, I'll try my best to make sure we meet up sooner or later.

Actually I don't think the person who posted them works for AP - I think he works for someone who has paid a large chunk of money for an AP feed. Which means his boss has agreed to only use that material for their publication. Which means that if his boss figures out that he's posting this stuff on the net - even for a select group of users - then he's likely to be in trouble. But it does mean that the guy works for the media. And should know better. And the thing is there are media folk who are regular readers of MeFi so it's now a lot more likely that this will come to the AP attention.

Okay...is all the stupid, juvenile crap over now? Yes? Good. Now, back to the important part...is anyone hosting these pics anywhere currently accessible, since I didn't get to see them?

Good fucking God do not click on shoepal's link unless you're ready to be absolutely disgusted!

(Already saw it on FP, but I did NOT want to see it again; try labelling that shit next time, shoepal)

Oh nice, the dorks at somethingawful banned me for making one small comment correcting an earlier one. Real smart way to run a commercial community. Hope they enjoy the $20 I had to pay to get the super account just six months ago. You know, I only ban as a very last resort, when all other methods of communication fail. I post some criticism here and they kneejerk ban me (after I paid to be there). Jerks.

So sorry bluetrain. I thought the original post and accompanying thread(s) covered the "hand" enough not to warrant a warning. My bad.

rushmc, here is the hand one. Here is the gallery.

I think that's the same link I posted yesterday in the blue thread. It is apparently their backup or something, they were upset that it was posted too. IF it is the same site, that is. I Googled trying to find an alternate source for the files and found the site that I posted a link to.

As to your banning, Matt... Unless they specifically told you why you were banned, it is probably because you mentioned the areas of SA where illegal files are traded. I recall someone on Usenet complaining about being banned for talking about it. Of course that might not be the real reason that they were banned or you either, but that is my guess.

I didn't look at the hand picture yesterday and I am not looking today either. The reactions to the picture were enough for me.

Sorry, didn't mean to come off as overly freaked out. The picture was horribly disgusting and I nearly lost my lunch, literally, when I saw it the first time. Say what you will about my thin-skinnedness, I didn't want to see it the first time.

What a deliciously bizarre thread! Matt gets banned?! Servers get slammed! Cyber-stalking. Hit-and-run forum threats. Trafficking in MeFi accounts. Illegal file sharing. Jobs threatened. Nauseating pictures. It's all so time-warpy and cyberpunky and spikey-haired and holy crap I'm grinnin' like a junkyard dog - lovin' it, I tells ya, just lovin' it - keep up the good work, Keyser, you fukkin flack magnet! And as I type this, MeFi goes down! Jebus! - it just doesn't get any better than this! Think I'll go crack a proggy, write a virus, paint my fingernails black, and pierce something! - feel the fukkin' noize, grrls, wutknots and boyz - it's all drum and bass and screams! The veranda's closed, you sag-assed lamers - action's in the alley!

Matt gets banned?!

Well, he deserves it. He keeps making blatant double posts. Plus he calls people on other online communities "dorks." We can't afford to keep that kind of troublemaker around.

Sorry bargle. Didn't mean to steal your link (propers). I just had it bookmarked and didn't know where I had obtained it.

Man, I'm all apologies in this thread. I second Opus Dark's declaration. Such fun in the blue and grey!

MATT GOT BANNED!

That's my contribution to this discussion. Good day.

No, no. I wasn't wanting credit for finding it. I just wanted you to know that they were mad about me posting that link too. Whether you care about what they think is your business, I was just letting you know. =)

They ban people for fun over at SA -- and then the people usually pay $10 to get unbanned again... they seriously do it at the drop of a hat. When your community is made up of idiots, I guess you can get away with banning being your revenue stream.
