Not a huge thing, but... how about reading the thread before posting your additional links? [more inside]
posted by soyjoy to Etiquette/Policy at 9:38 AM (20 comments total)

Maybe it's just me, but I don't want to add a link to a thread where someone else may have already added it. So if I coming in late I check through and mouseover the added links to confirm no one's already done so. Granted, maybe I should've capitalized "Zell" to make it clearer I was adding another "Zell" to Addiction's big three. But a cursory check would've stopped condour75 and then Vidiot from adding the exact same link, each time as though it were info new to the thread. (Nothing against you two personally, you're just the ones who did it this time.) Also on this thread, pitchblende pastes in a whole block of text from Andrew Sullivan, which is pasted verbatim a few hours later by Armitage Shanks. Again, not the end of the world, but it happens sometimes in other threads, and it lowers the overall quality of the thread to have these clueless redundancies, plus it appears that the folks re-posting stuff don't care enough about the thread to even give it a once-over. Am I the only one who gets that impression?

This is why you should describe your links.

yes.

But, what about this comment from Vidiot? Oh, damn, looks like that's been mentioned already...

no.

I think some people just lke to skim. My links get repeated too. I let it get to me once in the green.

thanotopsis wins.

I agree it's aggravating. It's no wonder some people resort to flame-bait, personal attacks and the like in the comments - it gets attention.

Like Zell Miller.

Mea culpa. Thanks for pointing it out.

I don't suppose you could just console yourself with the smug satisfaction that you posted the link first, and that the people who posted it after you are idiots, could you?

I already had that, crunchland. Believe it or not, I really am interested in this phenomenon and whether the quality of the threads matters to anybody else.

I am surrounded by fricken idiots...

It's happened in nearly every post I've made. You'd think a person could mouse over the links first...

I agree with soyjoy. I can understand repetition in one of those 200+ comment threads but I often see someone jump into a thread of say, 10 comments or so, and repeat exactly what someone else posted.

Take a few moments, read the previous comments and then reply. If you are worried that someone else might 'beat you to it' then your contribution is so obvious it probably is only barely worth making in the first place.

I was once going to post a link to harlem.org, but searching revealed it had been like a single letter in an older massive linkdump post by y2karl, I think it was.

So I didn't.

I care, people, I care!

Perhaps someone did not realize that Addiction's shit-awful FPP included three links. Or, has someone already mentioned this? ;-P

A Metafilter success story:

I almost posted "Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe MUSHROOM MUSHROOM --- Raaaape! Raaape! Oh, it's a Raaape!" in the Kobe thread, except that the eminently funnier Stan Chin beat me to it.

It was a good post.
