Long-winded explanations for deletion look bad.... November 12, 2004 10:18 PM   Subscribe

The long-winded explanations for deletion in these three threads look bad in Firefox 1.0 and the latest MSIE.

However, keep them coming. Deleted threads are awesome. And reasons for deletion? Awesomer.

I think "sucks" would have sufficed. But this is good too.

Yeah, that's all bojangled.

as an admirer of the late bill robinson i take exception to your negatory use of the word bojangle.

Actually, PrinceValium, I think "sucks" would not have sufficed, although the threads in question do, in fact, suck. Matt's explanation of his deletion of sucky political threads is an important step in getting some post-election balance back.

"Bojangled" is an Americanism, t r a c y - it's kind of like saying "it was all Burger Kinged up" - it refers to the American restaurant chain of Bojangles restaurants, and their poor service/crappy food. Here's another site that makes mention of "getting bojangled" - look for the reference to Bojangles Restaurant towards the bottom. We just love turning nouns into verbs in this country.

For all I know, the restaurant's name may have originally been inspired by the Bill Robinson's nickname, or indirectly, by the song "Mr. Bojangles", but I wonder how many even make that connection. For what it's worth, I do.

Bojangled" is an Americanism

A regionalism, surely. I've lived in various parts of the country and never heard of either the expression or the restaurant chain.

Nor have I, although I now plan to start using that expression, which I find delightful.

Bojangled is an Americanism

I've only read it here. I've always thought it was an American version of the Scottish/Irish term banjaxed [cite: 1, 2]. You have to admit, the resemblance is striking.

I've never heard the term used outside the song before.

I'd just like to point out how much I love the expression "jingle jangle". you guys do have a wonderful language, really.

I mean, the jingle jangle morning's coolness factor is just so very had to beat

I live in Canada, so it's not the restaurant chain (although that adds another layer of depth to it). I use it because A) it sounds hilarious, and B) it was the name of that stupid dog on SNL when Will Ferrell did that skit with Molly Shannon. In the future, think of it in that manner, rather than as some veiled insult at a black shuffle and tapper from the late nineteenth century.

Wow. Thanks. Banjanxed just got added to the mix.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

One of the greatest BAD band names of all time.

The "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album opened up an appreciation for traditional Country/Folk/Bluegrass for me (and made my later employment at an automated Nashville/Pop Country radio station that much more intolerable).

But "Mr. Bojangles"? A Red-Alert Antibiotic-Resistant Grade XXX Earworm.

"He grabbed his pants for a better stance and he jumped so high..."

"The dog up and died...
He up and died...
After twenty years he still grieves..."

I'm Bojangled.

you know i was only goofing around, right...? i mean i used the word "negatory" - one cannot be taken seriously when using it 8-)

Yes, I'm aware that you were just trying to bojangle me. I think it's weak sauce.

Also, I vote for deleting every thread that links only to a goddamned wiki. I have never, ever looked anything up on a wiki without finding at least one error in the entry.

The problem with most wikis is that Sturgeon's Law and Bayer's Corollary apply. At least in an actual encyclopedia, compiled by paid professionals, there is some attempt by experienced, paid editors to check whether or not entries are correct.

Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap.
Bayer's Corollary: Sturgeon was an optimist.

You do know that you are often able to _change_ the errors in a wiki, right sidhedevil? They're neat that way.

Yes. Wrapped deletion reasons look like crap.

Never heard of "bojangled" but it sounds like a Flandersism cobbled together by someone too squeamish to say "fucked."

SC, why should I bother? Someone will just come along and change it back to the wrong information, anyway (yes, I've had this experience).

Seeing as I can actually earn money (and have done so) for writing reference books, why should I spend my hard-earned time doing so for free, when I could be ranting here instead?
