the process of posting with a link evades me November 24, 2004 10:57 AM   Subscribe

True, I have battled many an apeman. Yet the process of posting with a link evades me. Can anyone give me the quick skinny?

Highlight the words to be linked. Click the "link" button at the lower right of the text input box. That should bring up a window with a space to paste in the URL. Hit "enter."

Welcome.

Thanks so much for the help! Is there a problem when using a mac or certain browsers? I don't seem to see a link button?

I had the same problem when I first joined up (thanks madamjujujive!).

I think there should be a rule that newbies can't post topics to the gray until they've been members for a week to force them to search for answers and figure things out on their own.

juju helped you fight an apeman?

"but you forgot to tell us who won -- you or the apemen?"

You know, that's the funny thing about fighting apemen, it's never easy to figur out who won.

ps. for Arch Stanton;

Been reading MeFi for years, I searched for the answers for two days. I discovered that the information on how to post links is as elusive as the windigo. Thanks to everyone who took time to help out an aging inter-species wrestling champ.

i find it totally bizarre that, surfing an html web with an html browser, it doesn't seem to occur to people that they would use html to make a link, given that the link is the fundamental unit of html, and the entirety of the web is constructed of it.

Right, as Nietzsche put it:
"He who fights with apemen should take care that he himself does not become an apeman. And if you gaze long into the browser, the browser gazes also into you."

I think that is due to the fact that so many web-based forums do not allow the use of HTML.

Oh come on. The same question was posted 2 days ago. It has nothing to do with 'being savvy'.

I think. That's based on faulty logic.

This guy is too busy fighting apemen to delve into the black arts of html. Give him a break.

I find it totally bizarre that you find it totally bizarre, what with bbcode being much more common than html in forums and other group participation parts of the net, like this one. Most community sites avoid html because of the potential to cause damage, and implement a proprietary control scheme instead. After all, binary commands are the fundamental units of computing, and the entirety of the web is constructed in binary, but it never occurs to enter binary commands in order to make a link.

I actually think it's a good thing that all the newbies are so comfortable with MetaTalk. mmm... false sense of security...

I find it totally bizarre that you find it totally bizarre that quonsar find it totally bizarre that some members of a group of A-list bloggers don't know enough HTML to make a link.
posted by mexican at 10:41 PM on November 24, 2004

I find that bizarre ^_^

My guess is not that they didn't know html, but didn't know that html is allowed. I was pretty surprised on becoming a member that plain html was allowed.

I guess I'm bizarre.

See, that kind of thing is why I'd just assumed html was not allowed.

That kind of thing is also what's causing me uncontrollable laughter right now. Thanks, scarabic.
