Just because there's no good way to get a thread shilling a new piece of free software noticed once it drops off the top of the front page is no reason to make a further thread noting the addition of a uninventive feature that was missed in the original post.

Nor does that fact that KevinSkomsvold saved it by turning it into a discussion about the merits of RSS mitigate my point. IE: What is the best way to do it?

a nice RSS reader is something most MeFis should probably be interested in, and posting the 48th comment on yesterday's thread doesn't exactly get that message out.

Yeah, this is a stupid attitude. You work *with* the site's interface, not to spite it.

you may as well drop it bonaldi. the preceding comment was culled from that thread by mr. haughey. the indication is he is perfectly fine with the open source pepsi blue posts, except for quonsar's comments.

METATALK HAS BEEN CO-OPTED BY UNRULY COMBATANTS.

the preceding comment was culled

Well, it made me laugh, so that probably means it's bad news.

Incidentally, I thought that having 2 threads on IBM selling its desktop business was even more pathetic.

I think it's a borderline thing. So yeah, the original post was ho-hum, but I didn't see anyone, anywhere mention that thunderbird did RSS now, and it was a complete surprise. IMO, that post was better than the original.

I deleted about a dozen posts complaining about the followup and in general I frown (and we all frown) on followups, but I thought that was a major piece of functionality that no one seemed to notice.

MetaFilter is not a place to "get messages out." I'm with the beetle: this is the wrong attitude from the get-go.

Not to be pedantic, but do you mean comments, matt? Don't want us all to imagine you've been too brutal in deleting posts*.

*I'm assuming that post = link on the front page, comment = comment inside a post thread...<>

Thunderbird 0.9, which I had been using for a month, has RSS support. I'm confused as to why the fact that this feature has been continued (apparently unchanged) in 1.0 warrants a Mefi post.

AFAIAC, the incessant complaining about bogus posts gets annoying a lot faster than the bogus posts.

And anyway, if you use an RSS reader like Mozilla Thunderbird, you'd be able to screen them out that much more effectively!
