Crossword puzzle post isn't quite right. December 17, 2004 8:13 PM   Subscribe

I'm guessing this should be moved here, since MetaFilter is about links (and no, the 1998 report of the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament isn't enough). Yeah?

Agreed.

where's the comment i just posted?

i said, most of the clues involve links. it's just that you have to work for them.

Yeah, Nyquil does that to a person. Get some rest. Preferably without access to the Transmission Control Protocol.

Look, I realize you haven't had your metatalk ridicule fun today, but i don't think this is warranted.

a) i spent a lot of time on this post.
b) it is about links that i think y'all will find interesting, which you might have noticed if you had given it more than a cursory glance
c) i think it deserves something more than personal attacks lie "this is shit"

"i think it deserves something more than personal attacks lie 'this is shit'"

My apologies. I should have said "This is a steaming pile of shit that should never have disgraced the front page."

Sorry for the brevity.

When you say, it is "about links", do you mean that it is concepts, and that one can find links related to those concepts by using a search engine? Would it be OK for me to write an essay about why I really like Hulk Hogan and post it to the front page? Cause I hear there are webpages about him too.

forget it.

delete the post.

mudpuppie: I think it could be a fun post, but the formatting and stuff just made it really baffling. And not in a fun puzzle solving way, but in a "what the hell?" kind of way.

It also seems to be more appropriate for your personal weblog, since the bulk of the content is from you personally, which is one of the reasons that you'll be given shit over this.

Anyway, ignore the snarks and good luck getting over the flu.

Hey, I only said "move it here".
posted by Pretty_Generic at 8:44 PM on December 17, 2004

since the bulk of the content is from you

actually, it's not. that was the point. the bulk of the content is [what it thought was] an interesting way to get to interesting links. i realize now that was stupid.

the formatting i totally screwed up on. that also was stupid.

it's not worth the energy.

it should just be deleted.

sorry, and you're welcome.

Mm, the sniffly, sneezy, runny nose, double paste, no preview, wake up on the bathroom floor medicine. Good stuff, that. Sort of makes me wish I had a cold to get over.

mudpuppie, I respect what you were trying to do. I think it's cool, and probably worth doing, although, as discussed, doing better, and in a way that goes more with MeFi, not put on MeFi. It's a difficult thing to do; you were trying to sort of play with the whole idea of what it means to post a link, and if you found a way to do it that would be just a little bit less subtle, and easier to interact with, then it could come off as brilliant.
posted by bingo at 9:39 PM on December 17, 2004

er..."...or not put on MeFi." Something like that. More nyquil for me too.

Your own personal blog would be a perfect venue for content like that.

Mudpuppie, that's not a personal attack. I understand that it's harsh, and if I had spent a lot of time on something, only to have mr_crash_davis call it names, I'd be offended too. (Actually, I wouldn't, but I can understand why you would.) But it's not a "personal" attack. It's an attack on some words you wrote on a web page. A personal attack is when I say something like "davidmsc is a mindless drone of the right, who just utters whatever talking points he heard Dick Cheney say on Meet the Press, and who never has any facts to back up his ridiculous claims." So don't take what anyone here says personally (unless they start off with "Mudpuppie is..."). Just tell yourself "mr_crash_davis must be a real asshole" and fuggedabouthim. (Actually, he's a dirty, hippie-type-with-a-haircut asshole who cavorts with *gasp* monkeys. Definitely not to be trusted.)

Dear mudpuppie,
Do you remember that day when you got very sick and feverish and you posted that surreal puzzle to Metafilter? And remember how you got better and realized what you had done and all the guys at Metafilter were OK with it? Gosh, you sure did make a name for yourself. And it really was funny, wasn't it? You became an in-joke Superstar and much beloved poster after that. Remember how we laughed and laughed?

Oh, and remember how I won the Pulitzer prize for my belles lettres?

Yours,
Secret Vice of Gravy

PS I've forgotten. What was the answer to :)"[Obed's mama] + [wife of Skroob] + [(grassy expanse - 'n')]" = famous winged one? Do you remember?

Um, no. TCP is the layer-four part of the same process for which IP is the layer-three part. You can use a different layer four, but you have to use one. There is no 'just relying on IP'.

With apologies to Gloria Gaynor

First I was afraid
I was petrified
But being home, both sick and bored
You know I tried and tried

So I spent all fucking day
thinking of a game to play
But I was wrong
And I’ve learned how to carry on

And all this shit
I see it has its place
Without it you’d feel less important
To the human race

I should have never tried so hard
I tried to shift the paradigm
If I’d had thought for just one second
I would have seen a waste of time

Go on now, play
Have fun with it
It’s so much fun to make e-strangers feel
Like gobs of shit
It’s the weekend and you do not have a life
You think I’d crumble
You think I’d lay down and die

Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as I know how to drink
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all these posts to give
and I'll survive
I will survive
Hey hey hey

Perhaps this will better express my feelings.

a) your feelings are of little importance to me.

She is nooooOOOOOOOOOOOB.

b) actually, not
Not that I expect you to care, or even think that you should, but my previous user number, which I have since remembered, is 9836. So FU and the high horse you rode in on, lowly #15532 .

c) what is this, third grade? grow up.

If you're 'not n00b', then you should know long-ass blocks of text are not a club favourite. If you were nice and/or intelligent, you'd realise how little user number actually matters to how good/lame a member someone is (...says a 20k+)

The whole thing was worth it for puke & cry's 'full of stars' quote.
