Self-Link Callout January 4, 2005 1:06 PM Subscribe
I know someone has posted a self-link as a FPP and hasn't identified it as such (he has also done it in comments). I think it is because he wants to keep his anonymity. I don't want to out him, but at the same time I think it isn't right to post a link to a site that is your own (esp. without disclosure). Should I just email him to let him know I know? Should I email Matt directly about it? Thoughts on how best to handle?
I would have emailed Matt before posting to MetaTalk about it.

Oh, my God. I just knew that rocket_skates was Fred Phelps!
(kidding)
Seriously, email Matt. That's just nasty. Self-link in comments is okay if it's relevant (like "If you want to see more pics of bunnies with pancakes on their heads, I've got 432 of them at my site here") but self-link FPPs are THE UNPARDONABLE SIN!

I think you should tell us so we can mock mercilessly. It's what we do.
Also, someone who wants to keep their anonymity shouldn't post links to their own website. I'd suggest that's actually an attempt to garner traffic; it's certainly not a very safe way of remaining anonymouse, at any rate.

Everyone thinks their own content is interesting. You wouldn't write about things (at least on your own time) you didn't find interesting, would you? The problem is that I'm not a good judge of whether something I wrote would be geniunely interesting to MeFites at large.

Perhaps not, but consensus would determine that wouldn't it? If you post crap then people will complain no matter where the crap is hosted.
And for the record I think the content I come up with is the very definition of uninteresting so I'm not asking these questions for the sake of some hypothetical future post. :) It just doesn't seem that terrible an offense to me.

I believe the offending post may be this one: LINK, about Kid Rock.
Both the site linked, and the poster's own site have something to do with patriotism, and are both hosted on the same machine with IP address: 69.10.137.75
The problem with self-linking is that even if you are linking to interesting content, you are (in this case at least) also sending people to an ad-supported site and thus making money off of the basically non-profit MeFi, which I think one of the reasons why self-linking is against the rules.
Furthermore, there are tons of mainstream news outlets reporting the story in perhaps greater depth.

pookzilla -
It does state that self-linking is a no-no pretty clearly in the posting guidelines. And it's regularly mentioned in one thread or another that self-linking is bad. Even when it's not particularly bad, one could infer that it's frowed upon by people posting their self-links with "warning: self-link".
If self-linking were encouraged, everyone would self-link in order to drive traffic to their site and to try and boost their google ratings, etc. It's tacky.
