I'd just like to point out that it wasn't me. We are entirely different subgenii
posted by subgenius at 9:35 PM on February 24, 2005

New Jersey puts the sub in subgenius.
posted by Armitage Shanks at 9:45 PM on February 24, 2005

Actually, subgenius, my first thought was, "hey, what's wrong with subgenius? Usually a good guy." And then I realized that it's a different person.

Jim Jones: it's not a comment that's offensive or problematic; it's a pattern of behavior over a bunch of threads. Isn't that still appropriate MeTa material? If not, my apologies.
posted by LittleMissCranky at 9:50 PM on February 24, 2005

If you flagged all of those posts, wouldn't the pattern be noticed?
posted by Jim Jones at 9:53 PM on February 24, 2005

Isn't it better to point it out here, so others don't make the same mistake?
posted by xammerboy at 10:18 PM on February 24, 2005

It's also good for the opportunity to publicly clear subgenius, because my reaction was the same as LMC's - what the hell is up with subgenius?.

Hope you feel you're getting your full five dollar's worth there, nj_subgenius.

'Subgenii' is a collective noun that needs to be used more frequently.

I didn't find the comments annoying. Frankly, I didn't even notice them. To each his own.

This was my first thought, too. Just use the flag. But I think enough of a case has been made that there's a problem user at work. And you can't actually flag users. Who knows how the ! queue is organized, sorted, viewed, and whether this kind of thing would be immediately obvious?

Hey wait! M&J know! So..?

I didn't find the comments annoying. Frankly, I didn't even notice them. To each his own.

Spoken like a man who wouldn't notice a rice-grain-sized fleck of shite in his bran flakes every morning. Whether or not to take a crap in every other thread isn't just a matter of personal preference. It's destructive and typical ban-me behavior.

Ah, sir, you have vanquished your foe with your superior use of text tags. I question your omission of blink.

don't you mean annoying?

Now all we need is a glaring use of an enormous font size and this MetaTalk thread will be complete.

Oh, and that animated .gif of Oolong.

Talking of (mildly) annoying, see also nanojath's new project, adding (largely content free) comments to the bottom of threads that are about to die. You may notice this particularly if you click on My Comments on the MeFi front page.

And yes, I do resent my giving him the attention.
posted by biffa at 2:29 AM on February 25, 2005

Hm. What a strange ambition. At least he hasn't made the mistake of aiming too high.
posted by taz at 2:59 AM on February 25, 2005

But how long will I keep it up? Only time will tell.

Another asshat gaming the system. Gets tiresome, don't it?

While we're on the subject of registering our complaints about annoyances, jessamyn chews with her mouth open and mathowie smells funny.
posted by DaShiv at 3:21 AM on February 25, 2005

DaShiv, I hope you didn't find that out about mathowie in the piercing thread.
posted by biffa at 3:33 AM on February 25, 2005

Biffa, now that you've called my attention to that problem, I'm starting my own DaShiv inspired project of foiling nanojath by adding "foiled" as a comment wherever nanojath has been successful.
posted by shmegegge at 3:44 AM on February 25, 2005

or, I guess it's not problem, but I'm still way too amused by foiling it to stop, now.
posted by shmegegge at 3:45 AM on February 25, 2005

I noticed nanojath via the "my comments" bit, too, but a few (very few, but some) of the comments have content (minimal, perhaps), so I'm on the fence regarding whether they're a pet project or if it's just someone going through the posts from the bottom of the front page and joining in conversations they haven't noticed were over. I've done the same myself by accident, adding a comment to a thread on a site only to notice that the thread is 2 years old (!).

Besides, while it may be a pet project, it's harm-free, and doesn't really damage discussion (there is no discussion), so I don't see it as "bad", per se, just "silly".

I'm on the fence

Bugbread, read his profile, from whence my quoted text came.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 4:39 AM on February 25, 2005

Ah, didn't realize where that quote came from.

So, as it stands, he's a harmless asshat.
posted by Bugbread at 4:47 AM on February 25, 2005

succinct?
posted by orthogonality at 6:12 AM on February 25, 2005

"Whence" means "from where." Therefore "from whence" would be "from from where."
posted by dame at 8:05 AM on February 25, 2005

The guy sums up his opinion of the link's content with one word. So what? [this is bad] is as valid as [this is good].

Of course, if the FPP itself sucks, then it belongs in MeTalk. ;-P
posted by mischief at 8:10 AM on February 25, 2005

I always thought that [this is good] meant that the thread has been voted on over at MetaFilter remixed. No? That would be a heck of a lot more useful than just commenting that something was good.
posted by scarabic at 8:58 AM on February 25, 2005

I'd never heard of MeFi remixed before today.
posted by mischief at 9:08 AM on February 25, 2005

dame, you're still starryeyed from the Grammarian post, no? :)

psst... scarabic. [this is good]
posted by aine42 at 11:20 AM on February 25, 2005

I was just thinking that since the introduction of the [!] that MeTa had gotten less exciting due to lack of callouts. Now all is well with the world.
posted by matildaben at 11:38 AM on February 25, 2005

I'm well certain that MeFi Remixed has been around since before March 15, 2004. Still, the fella who set it up may have simply adopted [this is good], a pre-existing in-joke, as the wording of the bookmarklet.

Still, if people are taking the time to note that something's good, they ought to do it with the MeFi Remixed bookmarklet instead of commenting randomly. Or both, at least.
posted by scarabic at 4:00 PM on February 25, 2005

Therefore "from whence" would be "from from where."

I realized what I'd done the second I pressed post, but couldn't be bothered to try and cover my ass. But thanks for playing, though.

I know *you* know, stav, but there are impressionable children out there and the Grammarian possessed me and finally the restraint I normally count on when the urge to grammar nitpick forsook me and--well you saw what I said about grammar-induced rage blackouts.
