I voted for what? March 9, 2005 10:50 AM Subscribe
I just got sort of tricked into voting for the fore-edge painting post on metafilter:remixed by casu marzu. While I DID think it was a great post, I had no idea mefi:remixed existed, and would have liked more of a "click here if you think this post deserves recognition on another site" link. Or something. It's not a big deal, just a courtesy issue.
Agreed, links that trick me into "voting" for something are bad.

Oh, should say that I wasn't trying to trick anybody, just trying to express something positive about the post. In retrospect it was a dumb idea, and even dumber execution, since people do feel tricked. So I apologize for that too.

Stop being so reasonable!
(I agree, Metafilter Remixed is cool, and it is underutilized.)

Casu - no worries; you've apologized and introduced me (at least) to Remixed. Doubleplusgood.
Oh, and I can't help saying Metafilter: Stop being so reasonable!

Yeah, that's lame. I removed it at your request. Don't do that, please.

Eeexactly.
In one of casu marzu's posts in the thread, he had a [this is good] that linked directly to the MefiRemix point adder thingie.

Quartermass,Matt deleted my comment that voted for the thread on Metafilter:Remixed when anyone clicked on it. It looked like this:

(Note: the above link just pops you back into this thread. No funny business, I swear).
I've started to spend more time looking at Metafilter:Remixed and less time looking at MeFi because the signal/noise ratio is much better there -- it's all signal. There are numerous posts in MeFi with lots of comments but little content (either in the links of the discussion), so it's hard to tell what's what. The good stuff is still there, it just takes more effort to find it. However, whenever I do take the time to read MeFi and I notice something interesting I vote for it on Remixed. Judging by the recent activity there, only a few people ever do this, and so a lot of good stuff doesn't make it over. So this was intended to encourage people to go over there and use it, as much as to highlight the post (which is excellent). I didn't really think this through, though. The inherent stupidity of this idea is pretty much confirmed by the existence of this MetaTalk thread.
You can see what happened just by going to Metafilter:Remixed. In a matter of hours, 132 people clicked the link. Since it only allows one vote per IP I'd wager it's a good representation of the actual number of users. By way of contrast, only 26 people actually commented in the thread itself.
This is at least somewhat interesting to me, since it gives some indication of the number of people silently reading along. Of course, due to the relative obscurity of Metafilter:Remixed and its relationship to the comment text, there's no way to know how many of those votes were from people who actually knew what clicking on the link would do. My guess is: not many. D'oh! But I swear, had my intent been malicious, I would have posted a comment that voted for some other thread (like maybe this one). Experimentally, the entire purpose of exercise was a failure, since I don't think there's been any activity over there since Matt deleted my comment. Most people probably just scratched their heads and then moved on.
Another thing I didn't consider is that it's entirely likely that webmutant doesn't have the bandwidth to support a lot of daily traffic on Remixed (on the sidebar he says its a "proof of concept"), so posting the link without consulting him only compounded the stupidity of the comment.

Remixed is nice, but in just a few extra minutes I can do my own editing.

I think Metafilter Remixed is cool, but it seems like it's underutilized. I apologize to webmutant in advanced if this is a problem for him, too. I'm curious if he has any thoughts, though.
