"popular group blog" Metafilter warrants a mention in this article which discusses how local issues in places such as university campuses can become widely discussed nationally and globally within hours or days of their initial mention online.

Huh. I guess college dust-ups come up here often. Cool that the historically anti-web chronicle of higer ed has the article online for free.

Interesting how many of the university administrators think the academic environment is not a public place.

The university is really very medieval, it's one of the oldest forms of institution around.

Almost every last encounter I have had with (British) Unviersity administrations has been a very depressing experience. The sooner universities treat students (who pay high tuition fees) as valued customers rather than the unwashed hoi polloi -- a necessary evil in justifying their existance -- the sooner their archaic pompous attitudes will disappear and the sooner they can begin to deliver the high quality education that their historic legacies would lead you to expect.

Do I sound bitter?

nthdegx: Give this thread a read. When unis treat students like valued customers, you'll get lots of easy classes and little to no education.
