IRL alerts aren't working

Granted with the pandemic, there have been many fewer IRL events, but given IRL alerts aren't currently working, shouldn't that be noted on the IRL page? Right now, anyone who checked out the IRL page would think they were working. [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Overlooked! Underappreciated!

Happy Olympics weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I'd like to know not your favorite thing, but a thing you like or love that you think is wildly underappreciated or overlooked and more people should know about it and enjoy it! Books, food, movies, sports, dog breeds -- anything you think the rest of the world would enjoy if only they knew about it! [more inside]

Endless Summer Book Bingo

Just a continuation of this Meta, which hit the time limit. A place to share our triumphs and recommendations as we fill in squares for the Summer Book Bingo card put out by the Seattle Public Library.

Metatalktail Hour: Sneaky pet/kid stories

I'm cat-sitting for some clever naughty cats who last night managed to break into the Forbidden Room and raided the good treats stashed there. This weekend I'd love to hear about your best pet/kid capers and heists. Have you been outsmarted by small creatures, or just looked on with awe at their ingenuity? [more inside]

A change in moderator coverage of the site

I want to update everybody about how moderator schedules have changed recently to account for budget constraints. The short version is: we’re actively monitoring the site most of the time instead of 24/7 to reduce costs, and while this shouldn’t directly affect member experiences overall it does mean occasionally waiting a little longer than previously for moderator responses on flags and emails. Come on in for some more detail if you’re interested. [more inside]

1. money 2. budget 3. ??? 4. profit!!

With regard to this post I think monthly budgets are fascinating to compare. This question isn't meant at all for you to share your income, just to give an idea of what you spend and where. Geographic location is definitely appreciated for cost of living adjustments. I'll post mine first. [more inside]

174: Knobs and Dials

Jessamyn and I were both feeling excessively chatty today so this one clocks in at about one hour fifty five, with discussions about MeFi, Ask, etc. along with a bunch of wanderings and heat wave chatter. Also there is a spider and a bird, and Jessamyn saw a bear outside her window. Also I fixed my goddam GarageBand, so we have music tracks again. I missed those. [more inside]

"In this story I think that the helicopter is a closet."

"I believe the story’s detractors were hurt by the title or some of the content or the very idea of the story. I believe they truly feel that trans stories should only be written by trans people and that Fall should have had to out herself before publishing. I believe they believe — still — that they did the right thing. They still destroyed a woman’s life." Emily Van Der Werff writes about the helicopter story, and what came after it. I'm going to suggest this thread as a space for gentle, respectful meditation on what caused this tragedy, potentially including the role that Metafilter played in that. [more inside]
