tl;dr: he doesn't mention his time machine

User 191 aka pb describes the equipment he uses for The Set-Up. Mention is made of a solid steel mousepad and ColdFusion ("yes, it still exists") but not his time machine or ruggedized wilderness capabilities.

Happy birthday, Cortex!

"Moderator, chief datawrangler at Metafilter", "cortex is a 32-year-old musician, computer geek, and generally reckless creative-type person in Portland, OR. His username on mefi is “cortex”, for reasons that aren’t particularly interesting."

Happy birthday, Cortex!

Coooooooooooooortex! Happy birthday, dude! I think dude deserves a shoutout for his mod duties, for MeFi music, for all the data crunching, for the fascinating subsites and just for being an all-around outstanding contributor to the site. So, thanks man and again, happy natal anniversary!

The Side Bar is open and damn do I love the drinks there!

I'm calling out the mod team for their excellent response over the past month to my post requesting more use of the sidebar. I've read things I never would have seen before, and they've all been excellent. Thanks so much, and keep it up! This feature makes MetaFilter even better for me, and I'm sure also for others.

I keep stopping by the Side Bar, but it's never open!

Back in October, jessamyn said, "We seem to have a small but dedicated group of people who use the fantastic flag, but a much larger group of favoriters. ... [P]aying more attention to them and being a bit more active on the sidebar (which is my job, more or less) is a good idea." But we've had only 3 sidebar entries in all of December, the most recent Dec 7. Can I respectfully ask jessamyn to do more sidebarring? [more inside]

Metafilter Musicians: Thank you.

Regarding the Point Source Pollution playlist organized by Dr. Zira: Thank you to all Metafilter Music contributors in general. Having just finished dragging speaker wire all over the room and hooking up an amp, I am thrilled to finally be browsing through Metafilter Music. I haven't done so before now, and I am astounded. I feel like I'm cheating someone, somehow. Thank you to the incredible barmaljova, Saellys, inoculatedcities, and Alexandros especially for the amazing work. Thousands of others yet to hear, probably just as deserving of praise.

The MetaFilter community played a nice, bright part in my day today

The MetaFilter community played a nice, bright part in my day today. First I woke up to find an email from another member who offered to send me a car stereo that had been sitting around in his closet for a while and would solve my iPod/car stereo problem. Best answer, indeed! During the day I scheduled a meeting with a little writing group I met via one of our own at a meetup. I'm definitely looking forward to that. Then I got pictures in my email from our own multi-talented DaShiv, of an art show I wanted to see last Friday but didn't make it to. The SF group rumbled all day about another meetup date soon, possibly when #1 is in town. I can't wait for that! Then to cap it all off, tonight I came home to find my roommate had a guest over. She recognized me and it turned out we'd been introduced at the MeFi/MoFi meetup in Berkeley. Small world!

Nothing earth shattering here, but good stuff all around. I didn't even really think twice about this stuff until just now when some said "Whatever community was once to be found here is long dead, unless you are perhaps looking for a community based on vitriol and snark.". Perhaps gd779 is kidding, or thinking of certain glory days of rapping online with old cronies now gone, and perhaps those days are over for those folks. But for me, anyway, here, now, the community is a goodly part of actual life, not just an "online" community, and certainly more than a cauldron of blind vitriol.

[this is good]
