Metatalktail Hour:

Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, wittgenstein wants to know, "What do you pay attention to/notice as you wander through the world that I probably ignore?"

SEO heaven

Is a domain an acceptable user name? Seems like it would be a perfectly good name without the .com on the end.

could you update dns records

this may seem trivial, but could you update dns records for metafilter.org to include ask.metafilter.org--->ask.metafilter.com

it's obviously a post in the Blue

I just used AskMe's Google search box to search for "Bush speeches" in an effort to find this post. The third result was this one, with ask.metafilter in the URL but it's obviously a post in the Blue.

touchstevesnuts.metafilter.com?

I used the Google Search and it returned all these weird metafilter variants instead of the post I was looking for. bukake.metafilter.com? touchstevesnuts.metafilter.com?

Why does talespin.net have the same DNS as MetaFilter?

talespin.net = MetaFilter? Weird.

metafiler.com

Picture, if you will, a web page. On that page, a single link. The text of that link: "Click here to find Metafilter." You click the link. The breath is ripped from your lungs as you are rushed headlong to the Ask Jeeves (UK) search results for the word "metafilter"!

...OK, there's really no way to make this dramatic. But have any other typo-prone users run across metafiler.com?

my domain has also been stolen

In the vein of hoopla.com and smug.com, my domain has also been stolen. I have no idea what to do about this. I'm stuck in rural Ontario on a brutally slow dialup connection, and it's tough to do anything internet-related out here. Is there anything I can do? [more inside]

unicom followup

A while ago, chipr's fight to save his domain -- Unicom.com -- was linked to on the sidebar. Slashdot is now reporting that the judge on his case has decided in his favor. (Congrats, chip!)

The double post checker isn't picking up "www.foobar.com" as a repeat performance of "foobar.com"

The double post checker isn't picking up "www.foobar.com" as a repeat performance of "foobar.com": possibly strip off the preceding "www." as part of the check? (There'll be a few false positives, but better that than a false negative.)

But just how many subs are there?

I thought I was special, but we all are. But just how many subs are there? What am I missing?

Is there an issue here?

Matt, in view of the sideblog link you posted to the "other" Metafilter, have you ever considered doing anything about getting ownership of the name? I hate to sound like an IP vulture, but what if someone else decides to start a MetaFilter a la the "other" /usr/bin/girl? Or, what's worse, does that and decides to prevent *you* from using it? It's an evil world out there. Is there an issue here?
