Western Europe storm check
How's everyone doing? [more inside]
The same damn user is doing it again.
Searching for the Young Folk Rebels
Searching for an old post. It was a SLYT clip, if memory serves. I bellieve it was the introduction to a movie that featured three people (I think E. European gypsies) playing folk music in a field... [more inside]
Stupid map
Just one of those stupid "I can't find it!" questions - does anyone remember a Youtube video of a map being drawn whilst narrated by a guy from a country in northern Europe who explained what other countries seemed like to people from his country? It seemed sort of dumb, I know - like "this is X country, they only eat salad... this is Y country, they are very dirty and like parrots..." - and the map was a silly badly-drawn MS Paint type thing. I know I saw it on Metafilter somewhere, but I'm also certain I didn't see it in an FPP... and search is turning up nothing.
MetaEuroFilter
Eurofilter. Next year I think there should be the mega UK Metameetup of all time for Eurovision. You up for it?
Berlin Meetup
A meetup in … Berlin? I'll be in the city until the end of August, and can guarantee a source of amusement in my attempts to speak German.
Viewropa community weblog on IRC
European (and EuroLovin') MeFites: IRC (irc.turlyming.com:6667, channel #euro) chat tonight at 9:30 GMT about "Vewropa" new community Euroblog in the making. If you haven't seen it yet, the AskMe question that kicked it off is here. The Wiki that will get you up to date is here. Have a look around, and show up tonight to share your opinions.
mefi is an american weblog
MetaFilter is an American weblog. Europeans here, whether British or continental, are mere tokens. Perhaps we should all give up the international pretense. The truth is that MetaFilter, for those of us not lucky (or, to be frank, unluckly) enough to live in the U.S. or Canada, is fast becoming a domestic concern with an ever-decreasing regard for what happens in the (enormous) rest of the world. Whereas (the few remaining) Europeans here are curious about America, Americans here seem boringly and predictably obsessed with themselves. Is isolationism the growing trend on this board? It certainly seems so. Say the word, by the way, and you can have it all to yourselves, no hard feelings.
It is not a good idea but it's a stone's throw away...

Mefi inserts itself into daily life
Trip Note #2 - Metafilter has inserted a new "mental discipline" into offline activities. On this trip to Europe, every time I speak with someone, read the foreign press, watch TV, etc, I often ask myself : how relevant would subject be in Metafilter's context, what would commentary thread look like. It certainly sharpens conversations. (I think Max Weber called it "unintended consequences of routinized social action") Weird symptom, or do others experience the same?
