Family-speak

Tell me about your family or household's language. What made-up words do you use? What words do you say in a different tongue? What slang, puns, or in-jokes are only valid under your roof?

When were your folks the happiest?

I just happened to come across my old flickr account, and it had some pictures I'd taken over a decade back, when dad was still alive and mom was ...not as... senior-ish, as she is now. They both looked really happy together, at the time. I don't think I may have seen my father ever smile, a bit, or mom being as accepting as she was of her husband. [more inside]

MetaThanksgiving

It's Thanksgiving in America, a day to give thanks, spend time with family, friends, & loved ones and share a warm meal. 2018 has not always been the most easy of years to live through, I thought it'd be nice to have a place to share thanks, to acknowledge that we made it another year on this planet, that we did it together. I'm thankful for my family, my friends, my partner, and all of you. I'm thankful that MetaFilter exists. Cheers.

MetaCheers

Tell me about that place 'where everybody knows your name'. Maybe it's your local coffee house or a diner or a bar or the local yarn barn, whatever it is, wherever it is, this is the place where people know your name when you walk in the door. Maybe you have a place to sit that is always reserved for you. You might even have a coffee mug that only you use, or maybe it's as simple as knowing the entire staff. Tell me about this other family, this other home. Happy Wednesday friends!

Metatalktail Hour: Family Jargon

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, Too Ticky wants to hear about the "expressions or jargon are used only in your family or friends group -- Bonus points for stuff that no one else would understand." This kind of question is straight-up my jam so I look forward to giggling for the next several hours!

Assuming genders in responses - why?

The asker of this post used "child" and "spouse" in their question, but some answerers changed those to "daughter" and "dad" or used she/he pronouns. Why? [more inside]

Pseudonyms for Mefites' family

I find the ways that Mefites adapt their usernames to refer to other people in their family (e.g. tel3path's tel3mum) really endearing. What are some variations you've seen and are fond of?

Is MetaFilter a community?

In one sense, of course, it obviously is. It says "Community weblog" right under the title! But there are other meanings of community. I was really struck by feckless fecal fear mongering's comment in the emotional labor MeTa thread: "You've got family here. Yeah, online never substitutes for someone who can touch your shoulder. And... there's thousands and thousands of people right here in this community who have demonstrated they'll give and give and give... Not that whole "I heard a thing and I care for five minutes." Real, true, love and caring for another human being; "shared pain is lessened; shared joy is increased. Thus do we refute entropy." Mefi? Mefi actually does that shit. Mefi actually cares--look at the whole NYC sex worker thing a few years ago, or really anything on AskMe. People here give a fuck." To what extent is this how we see MetaFilter? [more inside]

Find me AskMes about gently and efficiently getting kids out of the next, please

I promise that I Googled and searched with the on-site engine, but I just can't find things I know for sure are there - namely, AskMe questions about getting young adult children to gain independence. [more inside]

There were no blood relations in Lolita!

Since people are always posting about their GuFfs, BuFfs, and SO's, some of which are also MeFi users, I was wondering if there were parent-son/daughter or sibling users as well (that don't care if we know). Might make for some fun reading.

My father is cool, but is he linkable?

My father has done some things that I think would be of great interest to a lot of MeFites. I have no connection to the work other than being related to the fellow who did them. Does it belong in projects, or in the blue?

Follow-up to this thread

Follow-up to this thread on contacting my father for the first time. With the help of my real-world friends and the great advice at AskMe, I went into this with eyes-wide-open.

Matt's dad has had a stroke

I really hope that mathowie isn't bothered by me posting this here, but since he's talking about in on his site, I'm going to assume it's okay. Matt's dad has had a stroke, and is in hospital. The reason I bring it up is to request that we maybe take some care not to break things here over the next little while, and maybe send some positive thoughts in the general direction of Matt's family.
