Meh.

Perhaps this does not belong on the front page. [more inside]

In Our Lifetime

Not sure if (justifiable) politicsfilter objections trump history in the making, but I don't know whether this merits an FPP or not. Hence it seems legit for MetaTalk, even if only to get a moderator to rule on whether we can have what I think will be an FPP comment thread for the ages. But dammit, Barack Obama, the son of a Kenyan immigrant and a Kansas farm girl, is about to be the nominee of the Democratic party for president of the US of Doggone A, and it is a moment worthy of of being marked and reflected upon for many in this community, I am sure, regardless of our political commitments.

Just a "mefi awesome today" post

Today has been the best day in terms of FPPs in living memory. The sort of day that will keep me coming back for years to come. Can Fridays always be dedicated to the very best of the web? And statistically - what day has provided the most favourites?

Chelsea headhunter.

What makes this a good FPP?

"Mozilla not fit for general use"

Does the "Mozilla not fit for general use" FPP count as a self-link? It only calls out a single bug, which the author has commented on several times. For that matter, I don't think a layout bug is usually worthy of a FPP.

best of the yawn

Here we have a short (and fairly dull) Wired article, a link to Google News, a repost, and a bandwidth-exceeded Geocities site. I'm new(ish), but, best of the web?

what IS the "best of the web?"

An honest question: how would you define "The best of the web" in late 2004 looking forward to 2005? Obviously we live in a political world, but MetaFilter is a longer train of thought, I think. How can we balance current events with interesting and wonderful stuff? It's largely up to the noobs, I think. Matt has taken a huge leap of faith here and he is God but there must be a way to convert our indigenous zealots too. My fingers are crossed for the next few weeks.

Have we given up?

How is one link to MSNBC and solicitation of opinions "The Best Of The Web?" Or have we given up on that and just become a political site?

No real content, just more trollish junk

It might as well have been titled "This is today's senseless bickering thread". No real content, just more trollish junk. Delete please?

Not enough to be the best of the web

Are two book seller links and a book review/article enough to foster a discussion? This concerns thread #31772.

What kind of callout is this?

Generic bitching:

Let's start a pool to see how many quizzes will be posted to MeFi in the next year.

Ok, 2 in a day isn't that much compared to the rest of the week.. maybe someone should register amiaquizornot.com.

Had those forwarded from my aunt last month.

"So," I clear my throat and hike up my pants, "how bout them last two metafilter links?" Dihydrogen monoxide and an Onion article. Gee whiz.
