1. Think of something—a notable person, tech product, cultural phenomenon, et cetera—that has attained fame, achieved prominence within the zeitgeist, and/or become a normal, everyday part of our lives at some point over the course of the past 20 some-odd years.
2. Plug your word or phrase into an All Sites search (sorted by date) and scroll down to find the earliest on-site mention of that concept—via comment or post.

Quick heads up since a number of folks have noted/asked about this: yes, the search function for logged-out readers is currently not working. It throws up a complaint that is unhelpful but also not dangerous: "Unauthorized access to internal API. Please refer to...". We'll have it fixed soon, but just a heads up that (a) it is indeed a thing and (b) it's not something to worry about. Sorry about the annoyance!

I'm looking for a comment that I just can't find and want to read again. It detailed a version of Sex In The City as performed as a Beckett-like Black Box stage production. The women wailed a chorus of " THE SHOES" someone said " I fear I am not fecund". I have tried every permutation I could think of with no success. I'm 99% sure I read it here.

Did I hallucinate a Metafilter comment? I remember reading the line "Play him hither, Lute Cat" on Metafilter recently and though it was so hilarious I needed to illustrate it. I wanted to give credit to the original commenter, but I can't for the life of me find the comment. All my styles of google-fu have failed me. Did this comment actually exist?
