Why doesn't the Metafilter search also look through deletedthread to find duplicates?
Why does the University of Michigan have such a shitty football team this year? That's the real question.

jessamyn - Agreed, but one could also have a better idea if there's another reason not to post a topic or frame a post in a certain way.

Rich Rodriguez is totally inflexible. He clearly doesn't have the horses to run the offense he ran at WV and yet insists on implementing it wholesale. I wasn't expecting great things this season, but the personnel mismanagement has thusfar been astonishingly, embarrassingly bad.

I understand where you're coming from gman. However, adjusting the framing of a post won't be helped by doing a duplicates search on deletedthread. People who know about deleted thread can keep half an eye on it to see what links may have been wrong for MetaFilter. We sort of have to strike a balance between making the site easy enough to use for people familiar with the way things work here and not making it totally opaque for new users.
It's very rare that a link gets deleted from MeFi and then reposted only to get deleted again. When that does happen, it's usually because the topic as a whole is one that's not great for MeFi [yet another PalinFilter post or "look at these stupid people, let's all make fun of them" post] not because it's a dupe.
So, I'm not sure if you're worried about making a double post -- in which case we're really in "no harm no foul territory" because there's nothing wrong with making a double post, there are no demerits handed out, which is one of the reasons we don't work to hard to make it something that never happens -- or concerned about people being able to making good posts generally which is a larger issue and one that probably won't be helped by additional search functions.

Thanks jessamyn. I guess we can now use this thread to talk about U-M's football team. Having said that, I may know a lot about the original topic I posted about, but nothing about college football.

Yeah, I've posted links that were deleted before, despite having found out that they've been deleted before, just using faith in my badass-ness compared to the loser who did the previous post. A faith yet to be invalidated.

Good God. I was going to say "My college football team sucks," but then I went to their website and discovered that they had "a 64-33 victory over long-time rival Pomona-Pitzer on D.W. Patterson Field ... to remain undefeated and clinch their fourth SCIAC title in five years." WTF, Oxy? How can you destroy one of the cherished memories of my college years so cavalierly?
