Why doesn't the Metafilter search also look through deletedthread to find duplicates?

I think the reasoning is that a duplicate of a deleted post is only rarely a problem and things get deleted from MeFi for more reasons than just being dupes. posted by jessamyn at 9:07 AM on November 15, 2008
Why does the University of Michigan have such a shitty football team this year? That's the real question. posted by kbanas at 9:13 AM on November 15, 2008 [1 favorite]
jessamyn - Agreed, but one could also have a better idea if there's another reason not to post a topic or frame a post in a certain way. posted by gman at 9:16 AM on November 15, 2008
kbanas, I don't want to talk about it.
Rich Rodriguez is totally inflexible. He clearly doesn't have the horses to run the offense he ran at WV and yet insists on implementing it wholesale. I wasn't expecting great things this season, but the personnel mismanagement has thusfar been astonishingly, embarrassingly bad. posted by kosem at 9:27 AM on November 15, 2008
I understand where you're coming from gman. However, adjusting the framing of a post won't be helped by doing a duplicates search on deletedthread. People who know about deleted thread can keep half an eye on it to see what links may have been wrong for MetaFilter. We sort of have to strike a balance between making the site easy enough to use for people familiar with the way things work here and not making it totally opaque for new users.
It's very rare that a link gets deleted from MeFi and then reposted only to get deleted again. When that does happen, it's usually because the topic as a whole is one that's not great for MeFi [yet another PalinFilter post or "look at these stupid people, let's all make fun of them" post] not because it's a dupe.
So, I'm not sure if you're worried about making a double post -- in which case we're really in "no harm no foul territory" because there's nothing wrong with making a double post, there are no demerits handed out, which is one of the reasons we don't work to hard to make it something that never happens -- or concerned about people being able to making good posts generally which is a larger issue and one that probably won't be helped by additional search functions. posted by jessamyn at 9:31 AM on November 15, 2008 [1 favorite]
Thanks jessamyn. I guess we can now use this thread to talk about U-M's football team. Having said that, I may know a lot about the original topic I posted about, but nothing about college football. posted by gman at 9:36 AM on November 15, 2008
Yeah, I've posted links that were deleted before, despite having found out that they've been deleted before, just using faith in my badass-ness compared to the loser who did the previous post. A faith yet to be invalidated. posted by Non Prosequitur at 9:37 AM on November 15, 2008
Good God. I was going to say "My college football team sucks," but then I went to their website and discovered that they had "a 64-33 victory over long-time rival Pomona-Pitzer on D.W. Patterson Field ... to remain undefeated and clinch their fourth SCIAC title in five years." WTF, Oxy? How can you destroy one of the cherished memories of my college years so cavalierly? posted by languagehat at 10:21 AM on November 15, 2008
All threads mentioning Michigan should be deleted immediately.

The first college I went to had this crazy cult-like attitude towards football. Students would stand for the whole game, and I witnessed some guys kicking an overweight female student in the buttocks when she sat down some time in the third quarter. They also had all these weird screams. The really scary thing was the pagan bonfire made out of hundreds of trees and assembled by drunken teenagers who wore the absolutely filthiest clothes I've ever seen. Later it killed a dozen or so of them which may very well have been collective karma exacting its toll. I won't even mention the academic inbreeding that went on there. Scary freaking place, though I suppose some of their science programs are pretty good. posted by Burhanistan at 3:34 PM on November 15, 2008
