What made you pay? (the study)

Deliberate Barriers to User Participation on MetaFilter (Pileggi, H., Morrison, B., Bruckman, A. 2014) is paper from the Georgia Institute of Technology that addresses the following research questions: Why do people pay $5 to join MetaFilter? How has the monetary barrier to site participation affected the MetaFilter community? The study was announced by the authors in this MetaTalk thread but the resulting paper does not seem to have been linked here.

Struggling novelist trope

I'm trying to find an old AskMe question about the origin of the cliche of the depressed/alcoholic writer, who struggles to type his novel on a typewriter, crumpling one sheet of paper after another. [more inside]

Metafilter is a provider of social support.

Hello everyone. I'm a graduate student at CUNY Hunter School of Social Work; I am writing a paper on online social networking sites as they provide social support and intersect with the social service field. I would like to ask a few questions to get a sense of individual use and to observe the differences and similarities in experiences before I begin my paper. [more inside]

Is "best of the web" policy written? Where?

Best of the Web?
I am writing a paper for my Sociology of Cyberspace class and in it, I am referring to Metafilter. Don't worry, nothing sinister, it's just a paper on "How I use the Internet." Anyway, I want to refer to metafilter holding itself to the standard of "Best of the Web" but I can't find that explicitly stated anywhere. Am I missing something? Am I just google-challenged? Or is it just not explicitly stated?

Trying to find an old post

I'm trying to find a thread about a guy who was asked to write a paper for a college student, which he does filling it with horrible errors. My search has turned up nothing. Can anyone hook me up?

Here is my case study of MeFi for an ecommunities class.

Some of you may remember that I've been working on a case study about MeFi for an ecommunities class. Well, as promised, here is my paper.

(As a reminder, this is NOT research.)

Matt cited in English 101

Matt has been featured in Shift, Slate, Forbes, Wired, and The New York Times. Now he hits the big time: a citation in a college freshman's English essay.

What is YOUR vision of MetaFilter?

Fulfilling the MetaFilter Promise. What is your vision of what the MetaFilter (and MetaTalk) project could be or should be? Those here tend to agree that this enterprise is important, so why is it so? What is MetaFilter doing and what might it do? As an exercise in originality, consider posting your ideas before reading the others. (Disclaimer: I'm writing a thesis on Blog Communities, and this one's my fave).
